McLaren to Launch First Hybrid Performance SUV by 2028

McLaren, a brand synonymous with high-performance two-seater supercars, is embarking on a bold new chapter. The company has committed a substantial £500 million (approximately $675 million USD) towards enhancing its manufacturing and engineering capabilities in the UK. This pivotal investment is earmarked for the creation of its inaugural hybrid performance SUV, internally designated as P47. This strategic expansion is designed to elevate McLaren's profit margins, aligning them with industry leaders such as Ferrari, and is supported by Abu Dhabi's L'IMAD Holding Company, which recently acquired a controlling stake in McLaren Automotive.
McLaren's New Direction: A Hybrid SUV and Expanded Production
On September 16, McLaren formally confirmed its plans to diversify its product line with the introduction of a hybrid performance SUV, scheduled for market release around 2028. This move represents a significant departure for the British marque, which has historically focused on two-door, two-seater vehicles. The P47 SUV is described as a four-door, five-seater vehicle, reportedly featuring a larger body than any previous McLaren model. Early design concepts shown to dealers suggest aggressive styling, including 24-inch wheels and highly sculpted bodywork. McLaren's CEO, Nick Collins, emphasized that this SUV is crucial for achieving greater profitability, echoing the success seen by competitors in the performance SUV market.
The £500 million investment will not only fund the development of the P47 but also facilitate the expansion of McLaren's research and development facilities and vehicle production capacity. A key aspect of this investment is the establishment of in-house engine manufacturing for future models, a first for McLaren, moving away from exclusive reliance on external partners. This initiative is also expected to generate 4,000 new jobs in South Yorkshire, as detailed by the UK government, bolstering the region's manufacturing sector.
McLaren's foray into the SUV segment positions it directly against established players like the Ferrari Purosangue and Lamborghini Urus. These models have demonstrated that ultra-luxury brands can successfully venture into utility vehicles without compromising brand integrity, while simultaneously achieving robust profit margins. In addition to the P47 SUV, McLaren's future roadmap includes a mid-engine hybrid supercar, codenamed P34, slated for a 2027 launch. This supercar is projected to deliver around 810 horsepower from a twin-turbo V6 engine. The company aims to sell approximately 1,000 units of the P34 in its first year. A front-engined GT and a broader array of new McLaren models are also anticipated to debut by 2028, reflecting a comprehensive strategy to refresh and expand the brand's offerings.
McLaren's strategic pivot towards hybrid SUVs and a diversified product line is a calculated risk that reflects the evolving automotive landscape. While some purists may question the brand's deviation from its traditional supercar roots, this move is essential for ensuring long-term financial viability and competitive relevance in a rapidly changing market. The success of this venture will hinge on McLaren's ability to infuse its distinctive performance DNA into these new segments, particularly the SUV. As the company expands its manufacturing capabilities and brings powertrain development in-house, it will be crucial to maintain the engineering excellence and driving character that define the McLaren experience. This evolution presents an exciting opportunity for the brand to attract new clientele while pushing the boundaries of what a high-performance vehicle can be, blending luxury, power, and practicality in innovative ways.
