Investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that the heat shrink adhesive applied to these eyelets may induce bending, thereby compromising the integrity of the ground connection over time due to vehicle vibrations. Depending on which ground eyelets are affected, drivers might experience a complete loss of drive power, or critical functions such as headlights, windshield wiper fluid pump, air conditioning, or the engine cooling fan could become inoperative. This extensive recall highlights the importance of robust electrical system design in modern vehicles.
The root cause identified for the Mustang recall is a manufacturing anomaly in the wiring harness. The specific application of heat shrink adhesive during assembly contributes to a vulnerability in the ground eyelets. Over sustained periods of operation, the inherent vibrations of the vehicle can exacerbate this structural weakness, potentially causing the eyelets to fracture. Such a failure could manifest as a sudden and complete cessation of vehicle propulsion, posing a considerable safety hazard, particularly at higher speeds or in heavy traffic. To rectify this, Ford plans to replace the faulty wiring harness ground eyelets with a newly designed version that is more resilient to bending and vibration-induced stress. EcoBoost Engine Piston Failure Prompts Second Recall
A second, unrelated recall by Ford targets about 10,001 vehicles from the 2026 model year, specifically those equipped with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine. This recall affects a diverse range of models including the Bronco, Bronco Sport, Explorer, Ranger, and Mustang. The core problem lies in a potential piston failure, attributed to a manufacturing defect within the piston domes. Documents filed with the NHTSA indicate that a crater crack can develop where the piston’s nickel-resistant (Ni-Ring) insert meets the aluminum, compromising the structural integrity of the piston. This defect could result in various warning signs for drivers, such as an illuminated check engine light, engine misfires, or unusual engine noises, all indicative of a compromised engine.
The detailed investigation into the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine issue pinpointed a manufacturing flaw at the piston supplier. It was discovered that a loose nut on the supplier’s machining tool caused the tool to intermittently strike the Ni-Ring insert, leading to the formation of crater cracks and weakening the intermetallic bond within the pistons. Ford acknowledged 22 instances of engine failure in its own plants and two in the field linked to this problem. As a corrective action, Ford will conduct inspections on all vehicles within the recall population to identify pistons exhibiting these crater cracks. Any vehicle found with the defect will receive a full engine long block replacement, ensuring that the new engine components are free from the identified manufacturing flaw. This comprehensive repair aims to eliminate the risk of piston failure and restore the engine's reliability. Dealers have been informed, and owner notifications are expected to follow, with the actual remedy notifications scheduled for distribution in late December.
