Stellantis Delays Belvidere Plant Restart and Boosts Investment for Next-Gen Jeep Cherokee

A Strategic Shift: Stellantis Reshapes Future Production in Illinois
Delayed Restart and Increased Investment for Belvidere Plant
Stellantis has revealed a revised schedule for the reactivation of its Belvidere, Illinois manufacturing facility, pushing the operational restart from the originally projected 2027 to 2028. Accompanying this delay is a substantial increase in capital allocation for the plant, with an additional $200 million now earmarked, raising the total investment to $800 million. This enhanced financial commitment is intended to facilitate advanced retooling efforts at the site.
The Evolution of Jeep Cherokee Production
The Belvidere plant, previously responsible for the fifth-generation Jeep Cherokee, ceased operations indefinitely in February 2023, with production subsequently relocating to Toluca, Mexico. However, Stellantis's latest announcement confirms the Cherokee's return to Illinois. While pilot production of the "next-generation" model is slated for the first half of 2028, full retail production is anticipated to commence in the latter half of 2029.
Investing in Future Mobility: The Plant's Modernization Efforts
Since October, Stellantis has already injected over $60 million into preparatory phases for various projects at the Belvidere factory. These initial investments have focused on essential areas such as body, paint, stamping, and general assembly. The company plans for further expenditures throughout the current year, aiming to equip the facility to handle all powertrain variants across two shifts once it's fully operational.
Introducing the STLA One Platform: A New Era for U.S.-Made Vehicles
A key highlight of this announcement is that the Cherokees manufactured in Belvidere will represent an entirely new generation, distinct from the sixth-generation models introduced for 2026. These Illinois-built Cherokees will be the inaugural U.S.-made vehicles to integrate the recently unveiled STLA One platform. This advanced architecture signifies a forward-looking approach to vehicle design and manufacturing.
Expanding the STLA One Family: More Models on the Horizon
Beyond the next-generation Cherokee, the Belvidere facility is designated to produce at least one other vehicle utilizing the versatile STLA One architecture. Industry speculation points to the next-generation Jeep Compass as the likely candidate. This strategic allocation underscores Stellantis's commitment to leveraging its new platform for a broader range of models.
