Port Authority of NY & NJ and CALSTART Launch $45M Electric Truck Initiative

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in partnership with the prominent transportation non-profit CALSTART, has rolled out a significant $45 million incentive initiative. This program is specifically designed to aid port operators in transitioning their heavy truck fleets to electric power, marking a pivotal step towards sustainable logistics and environmental improvement within one of the East Coast’s busiest maritime hubs.

CALSTART anticipates that this latest financial push will serve as a powerful catalyst for transformation at the Port of New York and New Jersey. The objective is to scale up the deployment of zero-emission terminal and drayage trucks, alongside their necessary charging infrastructure, moving them from experimental pilot projects to widely adopted solutions for the port's numerous tenants. This transition is expected to streamline operations while substantially enhancing air quality for the communities surrounding the port.

Alycia Gilde, Executive Vice President of Regional Market Acceleration at CALSTART, emphasized the critical need for accessible vehicle incentives coupled with robust, high-capacity charging facilities to successfully deploy zero-emission trucks on a large scale. She highlighted that the collaboration with the Port Authority, by offering flexible financial support and simplified program administration, effectively reduces barriers for drayage operators. This not only modernizes the East Coast supply chain but also delivers immediate and tangible improvements in air quality to local port areas.

The comprehensive $45 million funding package encompasses two main components: the Clean Truck Incentive (CTI) Program and the Green Drayage Accelerator (GDA). A significant portion, $39 million, is allocated for point-of-sale vouchers to facilitate the purchase of zero-emission drayage trucks, yard tractors, and essential charging infrastructure. Additionally, over $5 million is dedicated to establishing five new EV charging hubs strategically located within a 10-mile radius of the Port facilities, ensuring convenient access for electric vehicles.

Both the CTI and GDA initiatives, along with an additional $3 million planning grant for the creation of a Port Community Advisory Council, are financed through a larger $451 million grant. This historic grant, the largest sustainability grant in the Port Authority's history, was awarded through the US EPA’s Clean Ports Program, underscoring a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.

Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia expressed optimism regarding the impact of these additional funds, stating that they are poised to make a tangible difference in reducing air and water pollution both within and around the Port. She reiterated the Port Authority's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, emphasizing that this goal is unattainable without the active participation of tenants, contractors, and partners like the trucking community. This initiative complements other significant port electrification endeavors, such as those underway at APM Terminals Elizabeth operations and the substantial investments by Yusen Terminals in Los Angeles. Audi's engineers have meticulously crafted the A2 e-tron to achieve exceptional energy efficiency, boasting a consumption rate of just 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers according to WLTP standards, making it the most efficient series-production vehicle in Audi's history. Its aerodynamic design, characterized by a drag coefficient of merely 0.24, significantly contributes to its extended range of up to 401 miles (646 km).

Customers will have the flexibility to choose from various configurations to suit their driving needs. The A2 e-tron will be available with four distinct power outputs: 125 kW, 140 kW, 170 kW, and a robust 240 kW. Complementing these power options are three battery capacities: 52 kWh, 61 kWh, and an 84 kWh unit, providing a balanced choice between cost and range. Even as an entry-level model, the vehicle incorporates advanced features such as bidirectional charging, allowing it to power external devices through Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. In select European markets like Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, it can even serve as a home energy backup with Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) capabilities when paired with a DC wall box.

Charging convenience is a key highlight of the A2 e-tron. The 84 kWh battery can be fast-charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes, thanks to DC fast-charging speeds of up to 183 kW. Smaller battery options also offer swift charging times, with the 52 kWh LFP battery reaching 80% in about 14 minutes at up to 100 kW, and the 61 kWh battery taking 25 minutes at up to 105 kW. Furthermore, the A2 e-tron is equipped with a comprehensive array of standard driver-assist features, including emergency brake assist, swerve assist, attention assist, adaptive cruise control, a parking system plus, and a reversing camera, ensuring a safe and comfortable driving experience.

In terms of dimensions, the A2 e-tron is a compact vehicle, measuring 4.32 meters (170 inches) in length and 1.79 meters (70.5 inches) in width, with a wheelbase of 2.77 meters (109 inches). Its size is comparable to other popular compact EVs like the Kia EV3 and Volkswagen ID.3 Neo. Despite its modest exterior, the interior is thoughtfully designed to maximize space and utility, featuring smart storage solutions and premium finishes. Audi has integrated the patented Fidlock fastening system, a magnetic smart storage solution, as a standard feature, and an optional panoramic glass roof further enhances the cabin's open feel. Orders for the A2 e-tron will commence on September 10, 2026, with initial deliveries anticipated in December 2026. While primarily targeted at the European market, with production at Audi's Ingolstadt plant in Germany, its potential availability in other regions, such as the US, remains unconfirmed.
