Audi A2 E-Tron: Extended Range and Remarkable Efficiency






















Audi is set to reintroduce a compact, technologically advanced vehicle with the upcoming A2 e-tron, scheduled for release in late 2026. This electric car aims to carry forward the original A2's reputation for efficiency while incorporating contemporary design and electric powertrain innovations. The Ingolstadt-built model is poised to be Audi's most accessible electric offering, blending a distinctive aesthetic with impressive performance metrics.
The new A2 e-tron measures 170.1 inches in length and features a substantial 108.8-inch wheelbase, shared with the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo and Cupra Born, and even matching the larger Q4 e-tron. This architectural choice maximizes cabin space, offering a surprisingly roomy interior for its compact dimensions. Aerodynamic prowess is a key highlight, with a drag coefficient of 0.24 achieved through features like air curtains, wheel arch gap reducers, and an active cooling-air intake. These innovations contribute significantly to its energy efficiency, with the 188-horsepower model, equipped with an efficiency package, achieving a WLTP consumption as low as 20.6 kWh per 100 miles.
Inside, the A2 e-tron features Audi's signature panoramic display, comprising an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch infotainment screen. An optional augmented-reality head-up display further enhances the driving experience. Practicality is addressed with physical buttons on the steering wheel for climate control and the integration of cloud-based AI for voice commands. A standout feature is the innovative Fidlock system, which uses magnets and a mechanical latch to securely attach accessories like cupholders and storage bags, offering versatile organization within the cabin. The vehicle also boasts a generous cargo volume, ranging from 14.0 to 47.2 cubic feet, capable of accommodating large suitcases. Material quality in the interior has been noticeably improved, with soft-touch plastics and fabric coverings enhancing the premium feel.
Underpinning the A2 e-tron is a variant of the Volkswagen Group's MEB 31 architecture. It will be available with four rear-wheel-drive powertrain options, ranging from 168 to 322 horsepower, with the most potent version accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds. An even more powerful S2 e-tron variant is in development, potentially offering up to 402 hp. The vehicle utilizes updated APP350 and APP550 electric motors with silicon-carbide semiconductors for minimal energy loss and offers four recuperation levels, including one-pedal driving. Battery options include 52 kWh and 61 kWh LFP batteries, known for their stability, and an 84 kWh NMC battery for higher-performance models, providing a maximum WLTP range of 401 miles. Charging capabilities vary, with the larger battery models supporting up to 183 kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10-80% charge in about 29 minutes. Bidirectional charging, including vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) functionalities, further enhances its utility.
The A2 e-tron is scheduled for order in Germany starting in fall 2026, with deliveries commencing in December. The German market entry price for the base model is €38,200, which is positioned above the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo. Despite the premium pricing, the A2 e-tron comes with extensive standard equipment, including a large curved display, navigation, a rearview camera, Level 2 driver-assistance features, wireless smartphone charging, and bidirectional charging. Optional equipment packages will also be available. The A2 e-tron will not be sold in the United States. Its dynamic chassis tuning and rear-wheel-drive configuration contribute to a tight turning circle, promising an engaging driving experience. Audi hopes this reincarnation will garner greater appreciation than its predecessor, offering a compelling blend of efficiency, practicality, and modern luxury.
