The Cybercab Paradox: Why Tesla's Robotaxi Sales Pitch Raises Red Flags

Tesla has re-initiated its push for businesses to acquire and manage their own fleets of Cybercab robotaxis within its operational framework. This initiative mirrors an earlier proposition from Elon Musk in 2019, where he encouraged car owners to integrate their vehicles into the 'Tesla Network' for passive income. However, a critical analysis of this model suggests a fundamental contradiction: if operating these fleets were genuinely lucrative, it raises questions as to why Tesla, a company focused on maximizing its own profits, would choose to divest such an opportunity rather than retain it exclusively.
At a recent Cybercab presentation on September 3rd, Tesla began circulating an inquiry form among potential fleet buyers, gauging interest in 'Cybercab fleet vehicle purchasing.' The underlying concept is for companies to purchase these vehicles, deploy them on Tesla’s Robotaxi platform, and subsequently share in the generated revenue. This echoes Musk's pronouncements during 'Autonomy Day' in 2019, where he projected that owners could potentially accrue up to $30,000 annually in gross profits per vehicle through the 'Tesla Network.' He further characterized Teslas as 'appreciating assets,' whose value would escalate with enhancements in Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. Yet, these earlier assurances largely failed to materialize, leaving many FSD purchasers without the anticipated taxi-derived income, and with Tesla itself ultimately managing the robotaxi services.
The consequences of relying on these unfulfilled promises are starkly illustrated by the case of MisterGreen, a Dutch leasing firm. This company made substantial investments in over 4,000 Tesla vehicles, driven by the belief that their value would appreciate and eventually generate revenue through robotaxi operations. However, Tesla's subsequent price reductions for new vehicles led to a significant depreciation of used Teslas, far exceeding market averages. Coupled with the non-realization of robotaxi income, MisterGreen declared bankruptcy in December 2025, resulting in a $40 million loss for its bondholders. This incident serves as a potent example of the risks associated with the 'appreciating asset' premise.
From a strategic business standpoint, Tesla's willingness to sell Cybercabs to third-party operators, rather than monopolizing a supposedly highly profitable venture, warrants skepticism. Companies typically do not outsource income-generating assets; rather, they delegate risks. By selling Cybercabs, Tesla effectively transfers the capital expenditure and depreciation burden to the buyers, while retaining the high-margin software components, dispatch services, and a share of each fare. Furthermore, these fleet operators would find themselves in direct competition with Tesla, the very entity controlling the platform, which could potentially manipulate pricing, prioritize its own vehicles, alter revenue splits, or even restrict access. In such an arrangement, the operators bear the brunt of the financial downside without full control over their business model.
This strategy appears to be a sophisticated form of asset-light offloading, disguised as a lucrative opportunity for fleet buyers. Tesla aims for these buyers to absorb the capital investment and depreciation associated with a large volume of Cybercabs, enabling Tesla to record vehicle sales, retain its profitable software division, and leverage its network. This model shifts the financial risk away from Tesla and onto the shoulders of the investors, mirroring the earlier FSD playbook. The narrative of generating substantial income upfront, followed by the buyer shouldering the economic shortfall, is a recurring theme. The MisterGreen debacle, unfolding over merely nine months, serves as a recent and compelling case study. If operating robotaxi fleets were indeed the goldmine depicted by Musk, Tesla possesses the financial resources, manufacturing capabilities, and network infrastructure to manage these operations entirely in-house, without the need to share any profits. The very act of extending this 'opportunity' should prompt potential investors to critically evaluate who is ultimately positioned to absorb the financial risks involved.
