Oil Giant Transforms Gas Station into High-Power EV Charging Hub with BYD

China's largest fuel retail company, Sinopec, has dramatically transformed one of its service stations in Shanghai, removing traditional gasoline pumps to install advanced 1,500 kW flash chargers from BYD. This represents a significant step in the energy transition, moving from fossil fuels to electric vehicle charging. The entire site has been redeveloped into a dedicated EV charging hub, emphasizing a complete commitment to electric mobility infrastructure.
This initiative is a direct outcome of a major partnership between Sinopec and BYD, which aims to accelerate the deployment of high-speed charging solutions across China. The innovative use of buffered battery technology in these charging stations allows for megawatt-level charging capabilities without necessitating extensive and costly grid upgrades. This approach makes it feasible to convert existing fuel stations into EV charging points efficiently, providing a convenient and familiar experience for drivers transitioning to electric vehicles.
Pioneering EV Infrastructure: Sinopec's Bold Conversion
Sinopec, China's leading fuel distributor, has undertaken a transformative project in Shanghai, converting one of its conventional gas stations into a cutting-edge electric vehicle charging hub. This landmark facility, located at 1209 Huqingping Road, is the inaugural site of a joint venture between Sinopec and BYD. The project involved the removal of underground gasoline storage tanks, making way for BYD's second-generation Blade batteries that serve as crucial buffers for the high-power chargers. This strategic pivot by a state-owned oil enterprise to dismantle its fossil fuel infrastructure in favor of electric charging solutions underscores a significant shift in the energy landscape.
The newly converted hub is equipped with six "T"-shaped chargers from BYD, each providing two cables, effectively creating 12 charging points. The layout mirrors that of traditional fuel pump islands, designed to offer a familiar and intuitive experience for drivers. These flash chargers boast a formidable capacity of up to 1,500 kW on a single connector, enabling rapid charging for compatible vehicles. For cars featuring BYD's second-gen Blade battery, a charge from 10% to 70% can be achieved in approximately five minutes, and up to 97% in around nine minutes, with only a slight increase in charging time during extreme cold conditions.
The Technological Leap: Megawatt Charging Without Grid Overhaul
Achieving megawatt-level charging without requiring a complete overhaul of the existing electrical grid is a significant technological feat demonstrated by this new BYD-Sinopec charging station. A 1,500 kW charger would typically demand a substation-grade grid connection, which is not available at standard gas stations. BYD's innovative solution circumvents this challenge by integrating four Blade LFP battery packs, each with a capacity of 169-185 kWh, behind every charger. These battery buffers supply the necessary megawatt burst to vehicles while the site itself draws only about 100 kW from the grid to continuously replenish the batteries. This design not only facilitates high-power charging but also provides backup power, ensuring uninterrupted service during grid outages.
This buffered-battery approach has been a cornerstone of BYD's strategy, which includes a commitment to deploy 15,000 megawatt chargers across China, built upon its 1,000V Super E-Platform. The collaboration with Sinopec allows this advanced hardware to be deployed at prime locations already frequented by motorists, leveraging existing real estate. Beyond the charging infrastructure, the converted station retains Sinopec’s 24/7 unmanned “Easy Joy” convenience store and features a comfortable rest area with reclining chairs and a health monitoring station, enhancing the waiting experience for drivers. This model presents a compelling blueprint for rapid and efficient EV charging network expansion, minimizing dependence on extensive grid upgrades and transforming traditional service stations into modern energy hubs.
