NHTSA Investigates Tesla Model 3 and Y Suspension Issues

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into around 1.2 million Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars due to numerous complaints about front suspension parts detaching unexpectedly. This inquiry aims to determine if a systemic defect exists that could jeopardize vehicle safety, potentially leading to a widespread recall if a significant flaw is identified.
The regulatory body's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has begun a preliminary assessment of the 2018-2020 Model 3 and 2021-2023 Model Y units. At the core of their concern are reports indicating that the front lower lateral link, a crucial element of the suspension system, has separated from the vehicle. Should this component fail, it could result in a total loss of steering control, rendering the vehicle immobile and necessitating towing.
A particularly troubling aspect highlighted in the investigation documents is the absence of prior warning signals before the component failure. While some drivers mentioned hearing unusual sounds, many experienced sudden detachment without any indication. This characteristic makes the issue far more critical from a safety standpoint compared to failures preceded by gradual wear-and-tear symptoms.
Although NHTSA has not yet linked these incidents to any crashes, injuries, or fatalities, the volume of 156 complaints is substantial enough to warrant serious attention during a preliminary evaluation. The agency recognizes that prompt action in such cases is essential to prevent potential harm before it occurs.
This isn't an isolated incident for Tesla concerning suspension systems. The company has previously issued recalls for similar issues. In 2021, approximately 2,800 Model 3 vehicles were recalled due to a production-related suspension flaw, followed by another recall in 2023 affecting 422 Model 3 units for comparable problems. NHTSA's current probe suggests the new wave of failures extends beyond the scope of these earlier recalls, indicating a potentially different underlying issue.
Tesla has faced scrutiny over suspension concerns before, notably in 2020 when NHTSA examined Model S and Model X vehicles after Tesla disputed a related recall in China. That inquiry concluded in 2024 without a mandatory recall, though a component change was recommended. This recurring pattern often involves an accumulation of complaints, followed by Tesla attributing them to isolated causes, and then NHTSA determining if a broader systemic defect is at play.
This latest suspension investigation adds to Tesla's existing challenges with regulatory oversight. Earlier this year, NHTSA escalated its examination into the company's Full Self-Driving system, expanding it to cover 3.2 million vehicles due to concerns about reduced-visibility crashes. This heightened scrutiny indicates a growing need for Tesla to address safety issues proactively.
The unexpected detachment of a fundamental wheel component without warning poses a significant safety risk. While current reports indicate no severe injuries, regulatory bodies must intervene to prevent potential harm. A preliminary evaluation, while early, can escalate quickly, especially with a high number of complaints and a critical failure mode. The progression of this investigation to an engineering analysis would signal a higher likelihood of an eventual recall.
