Ohio Breaks Ground on PJM Grid's Largest Battery Storage Facility

Ohio's New Gigawatt-Hour Battery Project Set to Revolutionize PJM Grid Stability
In a significant development for regional energy infrastructure, construction has commenced on a colossal 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery storage facility in Jersey Township, Licking County, situated near Columbus, Ohio. This ambitious undertaking, dubbed the Flint Grid battery energy storage system by Eolian, is designed to provide 200 megawatts of power for over five hours. Its strategic location is adjacent to New Albany's burgeoning data center and industrial corridor, an area experiencing a dramatic increase in electricity consumption due to the presence and expansion of major tech companies like Amazon Web Services, Google, and Meta.
Upon completion, the Flint Grid project is projected to be the largest battery energy storage system within Ohio and across the PJM regional grid, which encompasses 13 states and Washington D.C. Notably, it is the inaugural grid-scale battery storage endeavor to receive approval from the Ohio Power Siting Board, occupying approximately 15 acres along Jug Street Road. Eolian proudly states that Flint Grid is also the first large-scale battery project to secure qualification for PJM's capacity market and was the most substantial battery to clear the grid operator’s 2027-28 capacity auction, representing over half of the new battery capacity allocated for that service year.
PJM’s capacity market system compensates power generators and other resources for their future availability to meet grid demands. Batteries, with their near-instantaneous response capabilities, are ideal for this purpose, charging during periods of surplus electricity and discharging when demand peaks. The strategic placement of such facilities near major consumption zones enables grid operators to more effectively utilize existing transmission networks, mitigating strain while more extensive infrastructure upgrades are developed. Aaron Zubaty, Eolian’s founder and CEO, highlighted the project's role in leveraging existing technology to unlock latent grid capacity and alleviate price pressures on consumers. Although the precise cost, battery supplier, or chemical composition were not disclosed, Eolian confirmed that the project entails an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars, a commitment made years before the national discourse intensified regarding escalating electricity demands, largely driven by data centers. The Flint Grid is expected to commence commercial operation prior to PJM's 2027-28 capacity year.
