A pioneering carsharing project is taking shape in several Greater Boston neighborhoods, uniting electric vehicles with autonomous solar charging infrastructure. This program utilizes EV ARC charging systems from Beam Global to power a fleet of Zipcar electric vehicles. Participating Zipcar members can access these EVs at reduced hourly rates, ranging from $11 to $13, making clean transportation more accessible to eligible individuals. The designated sites for this pilot include the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority in Framingham, the Chelsea Housing Authority, the Boston Housing Authority, and downtown Quincy, strategically chosen to serve diverse community needs.
A key innovation of this pilot lies in its adoption of off-grid solar EV chargers. These units are designed for self-sufficiency, generating and storing their own electricity. According to Beam Global, each EV ARC system is capable of simultaneously charging two vehicles and can generate sufficient solar energy to support up to 265 miles of driving daily. The inherent advantage of on-site electricity generation is twofold: it negates per-kilowatt-hour electricity costs for users and avoids placing additional strain on the local power grid. This model is particularly well-suited for carsharing services, as household vehicles typically remain parked for approximately 95% of the time. Furthermore, Zipcar's Boston EV fleet statistics reveal that the average trip length is only 25.5 miles, providing ample downtime for vehicles to recharge using solar power between journeys.
Lizzi Weyant, executive director of MAPC, expressed enthusiasm for the program, highlighting its potential to pilot EV charging solutions without the encumbrance of time-consuming and expensive construction.
