New US Factory to Revolutionize Grid Battery Safety

Anthro Energy has launched a pioneering battery materials manufacturing plant in Louisville, Kentucky. This facility marks a significant step forward in domestic battery production, with an anticipated annual output sufficient to support 25 gigawatt-hours of lithium-ion batteries, enhancing the safety and efficiency of energy storage solutions.

The California-based company projects that this plant will be the first major US-owned and operated facility to manufacture advanced electrolytes, with an estimated yearly production of 12,000 metric tons of polymer electrolyte commencing in late 2027. This innovative electrolyte, developed under Anthro's Proteus platform, transforms from a liquid into a solid or semi-solid polymer during the battery's normal formation process, offering superior fire resistance and mitigating risks associated with traditional flammable liquid electrolytes. This advancement is particularly vital for grid-scale storage systems, where numerous cells are densely packed, and for various applications including transportation, defense, robotics, and consumer electronics.

The project, valued at over $42 million, received substantial backing from the US government, including a $24.9 million award from the Department of Energy's Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and $18.4 million in federal investment tax credits through the Inflation Reduction Act's 48C program. This investment underscores a national commitment to strengthening the domestic supply chain for critical battery components and fostering a resilient, US-centric manufacturing ecosystem. The facility is also expected to generate 110 permanent manufacturing and technical positions, alongside nearly 390 construction jobs, contributing significantly to local economic development and technological independence.

The establishment of this state-of-the-art factory represents a powerful stride towards a more secure and sustainable energy future. By addressing critical safety concerns and bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities, it sets a new benchmark for advanced battery technology. This initiative not only promises safer and more efficient energy storage but also reinforces national security through reduced reliance on foreign supply chains, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to technological innovation and economic growth.

Walmart's 400 kW EV Charging Network Reaches 100 Stores Milestone

Walmart has significantly advanced its electric vehicle charging infrastructure, reaching a notable achievement by establishing its 100th company-owned rapid charging facility. This expansion broadens its network across two dozen states, marking a pivotal moment in making EV charging more readily available to a wider population.

Walmart's Electric Vehicle Charging Network Expands Across the US

On August 21, 2026, Walmart announced the grand opening of its 100th company-owned electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging station. This significant milestone was celebrated at the Walmart Supercenter located at 16218 Jackson Creek Parkway in Monument, Colorado. The new facility is equipped with eight advanced charging plugs, including four CCS1 and four NACS connectors, all capable of delivering up to an impressive 400 kW of power. While most contemporary EVs cannot yet fully utilize the 400 kW capacity, this forward-thinking installation positions Walmart at the forefront of future EV technology. Shayne Wahlmeier, Senior Vice President of Walmart Energy, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, "Reaching 100 sites is an important milestone, and our broad footprint positions us to make EV charging more accessible for communities while expanding the ways we serve our customers." Most Walmart charging locations feature between eight and sixteen plugs, balancing CCS1 and NACS compatibility. The Monument, Colorado, site's eight-plug configuration is characteristic of the network's smaller installations. Walmart utilizes 400-kW chargers from leading manufacturers like Switzerland-based ABB E-mobility and Italian company Alpitronic. Specific models include ABB’s A400 All-in-One and Alpitronic’s HYC400 Hypercharger, with the ABB hardware deployed at the Monument site. These chargers are designed for efficiency, with ABB's A400 able to supply 200 kW to two EVs simultaneously or the full 400 kW to a single vehicle. Similar capabilities are found in Walmart’s Alpitronic units, which can serve two stalls with both CCS1 and NACS cables. An early test at a Walmart site in McKinney, Texas, demonstrated an Alpitronic unit charging a GMC Hummer EV from 1% to 53% in just 27 minutes, drawing over 300 kW. Despite purchasing its charging hardware externally, Walmart has developed its proprietary software platform through Walmart Global Tech. This in-house system manages charger connectivity, processes real-time performance and availability data, handles payments, and integrates station information with major navigation and charging apps such as Apple Maps, Google Maps, PlugShare, ChargeHub, and Chargeway. The customer interface is seamlessly integrated into the existing Walmart app, eliminating the need for users to download additional applications. This allows drivers to locate stations, initiate and monitor charging sessions, and manage payments directly from their phones. Walmart+ members also benefit from charging discounts. The company plans to introduce additional payment options as the network grows, recognizing the convenience of credit card payments over app-exclusive methods. Adam Happel, General Manager of Walmart Retail EV Charging, underscored the company's commitment to user experience, stating, "When a customer pulls into a Walmart to charge, we want the experience to feel as reliable and effortless as the rest of their shopping trip. We’re proud to reach 100 sites, but our focus remains on building a network customers can count on every time they charge with us." Walmart initially announced ambitions to install chargers at thousands of its and Sam’s Club stores by 2030. With over 5,200 locations across the US and approximately 90% of Americans residing within a ten-mile radius of a Walmart store, the company is strategically positioned to establish one of the nation's most expansive rapid-charging networks.

This initiative by Walmart represents a crucial step towards fostering the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. By strategically placing high-speed charging stations at accessible retail locations, Walmart is not only providing a valuable service to its customers but also alleviating range anxiety, a major impediment for many potential EV buyers. This comprehensive approach, combining advanced hardware with in-house software solutions and customer-centric features like app integration and future payment options, sets a benchmark for convenience and reliability in the burgeoning EV charging ecosystem. Walmart's significant real estate footprint offers an unparalleled advantage, potentially transforming the retail giant into a cornerstone of the national EV charging infrastructure and accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation.
