Mitsubishi's "All-New" Eclipse Sportback EV: A Rebadged Nissan Leaf




Mitsubishi is making its return to the North American electric vehicle market with the 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV, which it describes as an entirely new offering. However, this vehicle is, in essence, a redesigned Nissan Leaf, incorporating external modifications such as updated bumpers and lighting. This strategic decision by Mitsubishi, a member of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, allows it to quickly introduce an electric model by utilizing an existing platform, effectively bypassing the substantial investment and time typically required for independent EV development.
Mitsubishi Unveils Eclipse Sportback EV: A Familiar Face with a New Name
In late summer or early fall of 2026, Mitsubishi is set to re-enter the North American electric vehicle market, marking its first all-electric offering in the region in over a decade. The automaker is promoting its 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV as a groundbreaking new model. However, closer inspection reveals that this vehicle is largely a rebadged version of the next-generation Nissan Leaf, a product of the strategic alliance between the two companies. Mitsubishi has primarily focused on aesthetic changes, including unique front and rear fascias, distinct lighting signatures, sporty alloy wheels, and its signature Triple Diamond badging. Mechanically, the Eclipse Sportback EV mirrors the Nissan Leaf, featuring an identical 75 kWh liquid-cooled battery, a native NACS port for Tesla Superchargers, and a 150 kW DC fast charging capability that can boost the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 35 minutes.
This move highlights Mitsubishi's approach to the EV transition, leveraging its alliance with Nissan to bring an electric vehicle to market without undertaking the massive development costs of a proprietary platform. While the company acknowledges the Leaf's underpinnings, marketing it as "all-new" has drawn scrutiny. Pricing and range details for the Eclipse Sportback EV are yet to be announced, but they are expected to be competitive with the Nissan Leaf, which offers an EPA range of 259 to 303 miles and starts at around $29,990.
From an observer's perspective, this rebadging strategy is a pragmatic short-term solution for Mitsubishi, enabling it to offer a competitive EV without substantial R&D. The Nissan Leaf's robust platform provides a solid foundation, and introducing it under the Mitsubishi brand could expand EV adoption by making the technology accessible through more dealerships. However, this approach also raises questions about Mitsubishi's long-term vision and commitment to developing its own unique electric vehicle technologies.
