Mercedes-Benz Issues Extensive Recall for Rollaway Risk

Mercedes-Benz has announced a significant recall affecting more than 310,000 of its vehicles due to a potential rollaway hazard. The core of the problem lies with a microswitch in the driver's door lock mechanism, which is susceptible to corrosion. This defect could compromise the proper functioning of the electronic parking brake and the Auto-Park feature, thereby increasing the likelihood of an unintended vehicle movement or rollaway. This safety measure encompasses a broad range of models produced between 2019 and 2026, highlighting the widespread nature of the concern across several of the brand's popular lines.
The recall report indicates that the material used in the door-lock switch housing is vulnerable to moisture ingress. Over time, exposure to moisture can lead to corrosion, causing the microswitch to malfunction. While the primary locking function of the door remains unaffected, the failure specifically impacts critical safety systems linked to the driver's door status. These include the electronic parking brake and the Auto-Park function, which are designed to automatically engage when the driver's door is opened under certain conditions. A compromised microswitch can prevent these features from activating, posing a risk to vehicle occupants and those in the immediate vicinity.
The extensive list of affected models spans several Mercedes-Benz and AMG variants, covering model years from 2019 to 2026. This includes the 2023-2024 GLC-Class, 2020-2026 GLB-Class, 2021-2025 GLA-Class, 2024 CLE-Class, 2020-2021 CLA-Class, 2022-2023 C-Class, and 2019-2022 A-Class. The sheer volume and diversity of vehicles involved underscore the seriousness with which Mercedes-Benz is approaching this safety issue.
Mercedes-Benz's journey to this recall began with initial reports of door switch malfunctions between 2021 and 2024. At the time, these issues were not deemed to present significant safety risks. However, a report from outside the United States in May 2025 prompted a more in-depth investigation. Subsequent analysis in 2026 revealed that prolonged exposure to high humidity and temperature environments could cause moisture accumulation within the switch housing. The automaker has documented 176 field cases related to "comfort-function related" issues, though it states no rollaway incidents have been reported in the US.
The automaker plans to remedy the situation by replacing the faulty driver door locks in all affected vehicles. Owners of the specified models will be notified to bring their vehicles to authorized service centers for the necessary repair. This proactive measure aims to mitigate any potential safety hazards associated with the corroded microswitch and ensure the continued reliability of the vehicle's safety features.
