Ford's Super Duty: The Next Tactical Truck for the US Army




Ford's F-Series Super Duty is currently being evaluated for a critical role within the US Army as a Heavy Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV-H). This initiative aims to transform the civilian heavy-duty pickup into a military-grade tactical truck, capable of serving as both a troop transport and a mobile power generator. The project highlights the increasing demand for versatile vehicles in modern military operations, focusing on long-range capabilities, significant power export, and rugged durability.
The US Army's pursuit of a new medium tactical truck has led to a prototyping contract involving Ford, GM Defense, and BC Customs. Each company is tasked with delivering three ISV-H prototypes, built upon their existing full-size pickup platforms. Ford's entry leverages the proven Super Duty platform, adapting its ladder frame, robust engines, and transmissions for military applications. This approach allows Ford to concentrate on specialized modifications such as suspension tuning, crew protection, and advanced power export systems, rather than developing an entirely new vehicle architecture.
The military's requirements for the ISV-H are stringent and specific. Each prototype must demonstrate a 250-mile range on three-quarters of a fuel tank and cover 62 miles in eight hours under a defined mission profile. These demands necessitate optimal fuel efficiency, refined gearing, and precise engine tuning. Furthermore, the program emphasizes 'right-to-repair' and data access, promoting open diagnostics and field-friendly maintenance—a significant departure from proprietary software often found in specialized vehicles. This ensures that military personnel can easily service and repair the trucks in the field.
A key feature of the prospective military Super Duty is its ability to function as a mobile charging station. The Army requires up to 60 kilowatts of continuous high-voltage DC export, approximately 15 kilowatts of continuous 28V DC, and about 4.8 kilowatts of continuous 120V AC. These capabilities are essential for powering various battlefield electronics, unmanned systems, and communication equipment. This concept aligns with Ford's existing civilian Super Duty models, which already offer generator-style power systems, showcasing a direct transfer of technology from commercial to military applications.
