LG Energy Solution has commenced operations at its cutting-edge battery manufacturing plant in Lansing, Michigan, marking a pivotal moment for electric vehicle production and energy storage solutions in North America. This expansive 226-acre facility, representing an investment exceeding $2 billion, is set to significantly contribute to the region's battery supply chain, creating substantial employment opportunities and boosting local manufacturing capabilities.
LG Energy Solution's New Michigan Plant Commences Operations, Powering the Future of EVs and Energy Storage
In a major development for the electric vehicle industry, LG Energy Solution (LGES) proudly announced the official launch of its new battery production facility in Lansing, Michigan, on August 18th. This state-of-the-art plant, spanning an impressive 226 acres, is designed to be a cornerstone in the manufacturing of advanced battery cells and modules for a variety of electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems. The project, which involved an investment of over $2 billion, currently employs 900 individuals, with projections to expand its workforce to 1,700 employees once it reaches its full operational capacity. At peak performance, the facility is expected to churn out up to 35 GWh of battery production annually.
A key partnership for this Michigan plant is with Toyota. LGES will be supplying nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) lithium battery modules specifically for the forthcoming 2027 all-electric Toyota Highlander. These modules are destined for Toyota's Georgetown, Kentucky assembly plant, reinforcing the commitment to localize the EV supply chain within the United States. Beyond automotive applications, the Lansing facility will also produce more cost-effective lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells, tailored for critical energy storage systems, showcasing LGES's versatile approach to battery technology.
This new Michigan operation is part of LG Energy Solution's broader strategy to achieve a robust 50 GWh battery production capacity across North America. This ambitious goal integrates output from other key LG facilities, including its plant in Holland, Michigan, and the Nextar Energy plant in Windsor, Ontario. Additionally, it encompasses contributions from joint ventures, such as the Ultium cell plant in Tennessee and LG's collaboration with Honda in Ohio. The strategic focus on energy storage solutions, alongside direct EV battery production, positions the Lansing plant to mitigate potential impacts from fluctuating EV sales or changes in automotive platform strategies, ensuring long-term viability and impact.
