Florida Redirects EV Charging Funds to Air Taxi Infrastructure






Florida's Department of Transportation (FDOT) has stirred controversy by proposing to redirect approximately $198 million in federal funding, originally earmarked for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, towards establishing an "Aerial Highway Network" for electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs), or air taxis. This decision, revealed by a report in the Miami Herald, shifts the focus from widely accessible ground transportation charging to an unproven, commercially uncertified aviation technology. The initiative prioritizes futuristic air travel infrastructure at the expense of current and growing EV charging needs, prompting debate over the most effective and equitable use of public funds.
The federal government's National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program provided these substantial funds to Florida with the explicit goal of enhancing the state's public fast-charging network for EVs. However, FDOT's new strategy aims to invest in 32 "vertiports" designed to serve eVTOLs, with each site costing an estimated $5.6 million. These proposed locations, such as luxury apartment buildings and golf courses, suggest that the primary beneficiaries of this new infrastructure would be a niche, affluent demographic rather than the broader public that relies on traditional EVs.
FDOT's rationale for this pivot hinges on the argument that private sector companies have already substantially developed Florida's EV charging capabilities. The state points to a doubling of charging ports over the last four years and the existence of 452 fast-charging stations. While it is true that entities like Tesla, Electrify America, and ChargePoint have been instrumental in this expansion, the NEVI program was specifically designed to bridge gaps in areas less appealing to private investment, such as rural communities where profitability might be lower. This ensures a comprehensive and accessible charging network for all EV owners, a need that Florida's redirection of funds now leaves unaddressed.
In contrast, other states have actively utilized NEVI funds to develop crucial charging infrastructure in underserved areas. New York, for example, has successfully deployed NEVI-funded Evolve NY fast-charging stations in rural regions like the Adirondacks and Finger Lakes, transforming these areas from "charging deserts" into viable routes for EV travel. Florida's delay in allocating its share of NEVI funds, coupled with its historical skepticism towards federal EV policies, highlights a disconnect between state-level priorities and the national objective of fostering widespread EV adoption.
Despite the state government's critical stance on federal EV mandates—even launching a website, RoadsAreNotForPolitics.com, to label pro-EV policies as "greenhouse gaslighting"—Florida has emerged as the second-largest EV market in the U.S., trailing only California. With over 450,000 registered EVs as of 2025, a robust and dependable fast-charging network is vital for its substantial and expanding EV-driving population. The decision to invest in a technology that lacks FAA certification for commercial operations and whose benefits are likely to be confined to a select few raises concerns about equitable resource allocation and the practical advancement of transportation infrastructure.
This strategic shift away from established EV charging infrastructure towards untested air taxi technology presents a significant divergence from the original intent of federal funding. The focus on eVTOLs, which are still in their developmental stages and without broad regulatory approval, suggests a speculative investment that may not serve the immediate and pressing needs of Florida's growing EV community.
