In 2021, approximately 2,800 Model 3 vehicles were recalled due to a production-related suspension flaw, followed by another recall in 2023 affecting 422 Model 3 units for comparable problems. NHTSA's current probe suggests the new wave of failures extends beyond the scope of these earlier recalls, indicating a potentially different underlying issue.

Tesla has faced scrutiny over suspension concerns before, notably in 2020 when NHTSA examined Model S and Model X vehicles after Tesla disputed a related recall in China. That inquiry concluded in 2024 without a mandatory recall, though a component change was recommended. This recurring pattern often involves an accumulation of complaints, followed by Tesla attributing them to isolated causes, and then NHTSA determining if a broader systemic defect is at play.
