Glencore Canada achieves new milestone at all-electric Sudbury copper mine




Glencore Canada has achieved a notable advancement at its Onaping Depth project, located within the Craig Mine in Sudbury, Ontario. The company recently celebrated a key shaft development milestone, granting access to a previously untapped orebody rich in nickel and copper. This pioneering effort is conducted exclusively with zero-emission electric vehicles, aligning with broader environmental sustainability goals.
This endeavor involved hosting Ontario Premier Doug Ford, along with various political, Indigenous, and community leaders, to commemorate the progress. Peter Xavier, COO of Glencore Canada, emphasized the environmental benefits, stating that eradicating diesel emissions significantly lowers the need for ventilation and cooling, which traditionally constitute major energy demands in subterranean mining. The adoption of battery-electric vehicles contributes substantially to both Glencore's overarching sustainability targets and Canada's national net-zero ambitions.
The Onaping Depth project showcases a fleet of 23 battery-electric machines from Epiroc, covering a wide array of mining activities. This includes advanced loaders for ore movement, high-capacity haul trucks, precision drills for blast holes, and specialized machines for rock reinforcement and long-hole drilling. This extensive deployment of electric heavy machinery solidifies Glencore's long-term commitment to the region, with an investment of $2 billion. Once fully operational, the mine is projected to create over 400 permanent jobs and prolong nickel production in the Sudbury Basin well beyond 2040, securing the future of mining in the area.
