Wawa Expands EV Charging Network with Electrify America Partnership

Wawa, the well-known convenience store chain, is significantly broadening its commitment to electric vehicle infrastructure by introducing its own branded DC fast-charging stations through a collaboration with Electrify America. This initiative follows Wawa's earlier venture into self-branded Tesla Superchargers and marks a strategic expansion into a more direct role in the burgeoning EV charging sector. The initial rollout will see eight new charging locations established across Pennsylvania, offering advanced charging capabilities to cater to the growing number of electric vehicle owners.
Earlier this year, Wawa successfully launched Tesla Superchargers under its own brand, demonstrating an early commitment to providing EV charging solutions. Building on this experience, the company is now partnering with Electrify America. This new collaboration leverages Electrify America's white-label charging platform, allowing Wawa to operate these stations under its distinct branding while benefiting from Electrify America's robust equipment, sophisticated software, and comprehensive network support. This approach enables Wawa to maintain brand consistency and operational control while utilizing established technological expertise.
The Pennsylvania expansion will introduce two types of charging setups. Five of the new sites will be equipped with both North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors, boasting impressive charging speeds of up to 400 kW. The remaining three locations will feature CCS chargers with capabilities up to 350 kW. While actual charging speeds depend on the vehicle's battery and charging system, the 400 kW capacity positions these new Wawa stations among the fastest public chargers available in the United States, providing a premium charging experience for drivers.
Rich Makin, Wawa's senior vice president and chief fuel and development officer, emphasized the strategic importance of this move, stating that owning Wawa-branded EV chargers allows the company to offer more charging options across its operations spanning 14 states. He characterized the Pennsylvania rollout as a crucial test phase for Wawa-owned charging infrastructure. This direct ownership model grants Wawa greater control over the reliability, branding, and overall customer experience. The aim is to enhance convenience for customers who stop to charge their vehicles, ideally encouraging them to also visit the store for refreshments or food while they wait, thereby integrating charging into their convenience store visits.
The three 350 kW, CCS-only stations are slated for specific locations including Bristol Pike in Bristol, Schantz Road in Allentown, and John Fries Highway in Quakertown. The five more powerful 400 kW stations, featuring both CCS and NACS connectors, will be situated at West Chester Pike in Upper Darby, Egypt Road in Phoenixville, West Baltimore Pike in Media, Maynard Street in Williamsport, and Lancaster Avenue in Reading. These strategically chosen sites aim to serve various communities and travel routes within Pennsylvania.
This latest initiative does not supersede Wawa's existing partnerships, such as those with Tesla and IONNA, where it also hosts fast chargers. Instead, it signals a deeper ambition for Wawa to take a more active and direct role in the energy retail landscape as electric vehicle charging becomes an increasingly significant component of the convenience store business model. While individual opening dates and pricing details for these eight new stations are yet to be announced, this move clearly indicates Wawa's intent to solidify its position as a key player in the evolving electric vehicle ecosystem.
The expansion into self-branded Electrify America charging stations represents a pivotal step for Wawa in diversifying its energy offerings. By taking greater control over the charging infrastructure, Wawa aims to improve service quality and integrate EV charging more seamlessly into its existing business, enhancing the overall customer experience and preparing for the future of transportation.
