Portland Airport Unveils Innovative Overhead EV Charging System for Rental Fleets

Portland International Airport (PDX) has embraced an innovative approach to electric vehicle (EV) charging with the recent installation of a state-of-the-art overhead system. This forward-thinking infrastructure allows the airport to efficiently power up to 20 rental EVs simultaneously, addressing the critical need for rapid turnaround times in a space-constrained environment.
Portland Airport Leads the Way with Overhead EV Charging Innovation
In a significant stride towards sustainable transportation infrastructure, Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon has successfully deployed an advanced overhead fast-charging solution from ChargePoint. The system, implemented at the airport's Quick Turnaround Facility (QTA), is designed to service rental car fleets, allowing multiple electric vehicles to be recharged swiftly and efficiently between rentals.
On August 19, 2026, the facility activated 10 dual-port fast-chargers, each delivering 200 kW of power. These units are strategically mounted overhead, featuring retractable cables that can be easily extended by operators when a vehicle requires charging. This design ingeniously keeps the charging equipment and cables clear of vehicle pathways, optimizing workflow and preventing potential damage in the busy QTA environment, where rental companies prepare cars for new customers.
Jeremiah Hartley, the airport rental car manager at Portland International Airport, highlighted the dual benefits of this innovative setup, noting that it significantly reduced installation costs by minimizing conduit and wiring requirements. Furthermore, the elevated placement provides crucial protection against accidental collisions from moving vehicles, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the charging infrastructure. While ChargePoint did not specify which rental companies would utilize the new system, major players like Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, Thrifty, and Zipcar operate at PDX, all of whom stand to benefit from this enhanced capability.
The system is further augmented by ChargePoint's sophisticated fleet software, which offers remote monitoring and troubleshooting functionalities. This technology empowers operators to manage charging schedules based on vehicle demand, ensuring optimal fleet readiness.
