Volvo's Ambitious Plan: 13 New Models by 2030 to Boost Market Share

Volvo is embarking on its most extensive product strategy in its 99-year history, with an ambitious plan to introduce 13 new models by the close of 2030. This initiative aims to address a recent downturn in sales, with the Swedish automaker, owned by China’s Geely, targeting a significant increase in its global presence.
The comprehensive overhaul includes the launch of seven new vehicles for the American and European markets, alongside an additional six models specifically designed for China. This aggressive push, which will span the next four years, is expected to feature a blend of cutting-edge electric vehicles and third-generation hybrid powertrains. Volvo projects that this strategic expansion will not only double its market share but also elevate its earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) margin to over 8%, a substantial rise from 3.5% in 2025. The brand's new vehicles intended for Western markets will utilize the HuginCore computing platform and be built on the SPA2 and SPA3 architectures, currently exclusive to electric models like the EX90 SUV, ES90 sedan, and EX60 crossover, indicating a strong commitment to electrification in these regions. There are even discussions about reintroducing electric sedan and wagon variants, potentially bearing the S60 and V70 designations, to the US market as early as 2028, and a new EX50 crossover could also be in the pipeline. Conversely, the six models destined for the Chinese market will leverage platforms developed by Geely, incorporating a dedicated technological framework designed for local preferences. This collaboration between Volvo and Geely will also involve sharing components and supply chains to optimize costs.
Hakan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars' president and CEO, expressed confidence in this bold direction, stating that the company's showrooms would present a dramatically different landscape by 2030. He emphasized that this represents Volvo's most robust product lineup ever, meticulously adapted to meet regional demands and underscore the brand's aspiration to lead in the premium automotive sector. This product offensive will also transform Volvo's sales approach, introducing transparent pricing, streamlined product offerings, and specialized options for rapid delivery. Furthermore, the software-defined nature of the SPA2 and SPA3 architectures will facilitate regular over-the-air software updates, enhancing the ownership experience.
Volvo's commitment to innovation and adaptability, demonstrated by its expansive product launch strategy, reinforces the idea that forward-thinking and responsive approaches are essential for sustained growth and relevance in a competitive global market. By embracing electrification and tailoring offerings to diverse regional needs, Volvo is not merely expanding its portfolio but actively shaping a more sustainable and technologically advanced future for automotive transport, showcasing a clear vision for progress and excellence.
