BYD's New Formula S EV Series Challenges Tesla Model 3 with Aggressive Pricing and Advanced Features

BYD has introduced its latest electric vehicle lineup, the Formula S series, through its Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand. This new collection of electric sedans and GT models is set to disrupt the market with an aggressively competitive price point, beginning at less than $29,000, making it a more accessible alternative to the Tesla Model 3. This strategic launch underscores BYD's ambition to capture a larger share of the global EV market by offering a compelling combination of value, performance, and advanced technology.
The Formula S series marks a significant expansion for Fang Cheng Bao, which is BYD's fifth sub-brand, complementing its existing Denza, Yangwang, Dynasty, and Ocean series. Known for its robust off-road electric and plug-in hybrid SUVs, such as the Bao 8 and Bao 5, Fang Cheng Bao is now venturing into the sedan and grand touring segments. This move is a direct challenge to established players like the Tesla Model 3 and Xiaomi SU7, indicating a clear intent to dominate the top-selling electric sedan categories in China. The series was first previewed at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, where BYD showcased a diverse range of electric vehicles, from high-performance supercars to luxury SUVs.
The Formula S series is available in five distinct variants: three sedan configurations and two GT models. Pricing ranges from 189,900 yuan to 239,900 yuan, approximately $28,000 to $35,000. All models are equipped with BYD's state-of-the-art Blade Batteries and a high-speed Flash Charging system, ensuring efficient power delivery and quick replenishment. The rear-wheel drive (RWD) Formula S sedan, starting at 189,900 yuan, boasts a CLTC driving range of up to 466 miles (750 km). A long-range RWD version extends this to an impressive 559 miles (900 km) for 209,900 yuan, while the all-wheel-drive (AWD) sedan offers 453 miles (730 km) at 229,900 yuan. The Formula S GT models, available in RWD and AWD, provide CLTC ranges of 850 km and 730 km, respectively, with prices beginning at 219,900 yuan for the RWD and 239,900 yuan for the AWD.
Beyond impressive range and competitive pricing, the Formula S series integrates BYD's advanced God's Eye B assisted driving system. This system includes sophisticated ADAS features like high-speed navigation on autopilot and comprehensive intelligent parking capabilities, enhancing both safety and convenience. Buyers also have the option to choose between BYD’s DiSus-A or DiSus-M intelligent body control systems, marketed as offering "One car, two personalities," allowing for a personalized driving experience. The flash charging technology is particularly noteworthy, enabling a charge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes, and a 10% to 97% charge in a mere 9 minutes.
The interiors of both the Formula S sedan and GT models are designed with a focus on luxury and technological integration. They feature 128-color wraparound ambient mood lighting, integrated sports seats, a zero-gravity front passenger seat, and a large 26-inch AR-HUD. A three-spoke sports steering wheel and even a 6.9L Smart Refrigerator add to the premium feel. In terms of dimensions, the Formula S sedan is slightly larger than the Tesla Model 3, measuring 5,060 mm in length, 1,967 mm in width, and 1,483 mm in height, with a 2,960 mm wheelbase. The GT model measures 5,025 mm in length. This new series presents a formidable challenge to existing electric vehicle offerings, particularly the Tesla Model 3, which starts at 235,500 yuan ($35,000) for its RWD version in China, offering a CLTC range of 394 miles (634 km).
BYD's Formula S series represents a strategic advancement in the electric vehicle market, offering compelling alternatives to established models like the Tesla Model 3. With its attractive pricing, extensive driving range options, rapid charging technology, and advanced driver-assistance systems, BYD is well-positioned to expand its influence globally. The luxurious interiors and thoughtful design elements further enhance the appeal of these new models, demonstrating BYD's commitment to delivering high-quality, feature-rich electric vehicles to a broader consumer base.
