Volvo's recently released 2027 EX60 P10 AWD electric SUV now officially carries an EPA-rated range of 330 miles, an increase of eight miles from its initial projection. This enhancement, while modest, positions the EX60 as Volvo’s leading EV in terms of travel distance in the United States. Despite this, it remains considerably less than the BMW iX3's impressive 434-mile range, highlighting a significant disparity in electric vehicle capabilities between the two luxury manufacturers. The choice of wheel size also plays a crucial role in the EX60's performance, with larger wheels leading to a noticeable reduction in range.
Official EPA Figures for Volvo EX60 Reveal Extended Range, Yet BMW's iX3 Maintains Significant Lead
The 2027 Volvo EX60 P10 AWD, a highly anticipated electric SUV, has received its official Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating, confirming a driving range of 330 miles on a single charge. This figure, while an improvement of eight miles over Volvo's preliminary estimates, applies to models equipped with 20- or 21-inch wheels. Drivers opting for the larger, more visually striking 22-inch wheels will experience a reduced range of 312 miles, underscoring the direct impact of wheel dimensions on electric vehicle efficiency. Similarly, the rear-wheel-drive EX60 P6 variant achieves 307 miles with smaller wheels, dropping to 295 miles with the larger 22-inch option.
Despite this commendable enhancement, the EX60 faces stiff competition from BMW’s latest electric SUV, the 2027 iX3 50 xDrive. The iX3, when fitted with 20-inch summer tires, boasts an astounding EPA-estimated range of 434 miles. Even its less efficient configurations deliver between 383 and 399 miles, placing BMW well ahead of Volvo by a margin of 104 miles in their most efficient iterations. This substantial difference in range sets a challenging benchmark for Volvo in the premium midsize electric SUV segment.
However, Volvo is not out of the race. The EX60's advanced SPA3 platform and 800-volt system enable rapid charging, recovering 165 miles of range in just 10 minutes at a suitable DC fast charger. Furthermore, it is the first Volvo in the U.S. to integrate a built-in NACS port, allowing direct access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network without the need for an adapter. Volvo has also hinted at a future high-performance EX60 P12 AWD model, projected to achieve a 400-mile range, which could significantly narrow the gap with its German rival and intensify the competition in the electric SUV market.
