A detailed evaluation has been conducted on the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, America's most budget-friendly electric vehicle, focusing on its range performance during a sustained 70 mph highway journey. This latest iteration of the Bolt, despite its similar appearance to previous models, boasts significant enhancements in range, charging efficiency, and technological features, all while maintaining an attractive entry price below $30,000. For an electric vehicle to truly succeed, its stated range must align with real-world driving conditions, a critical factor for prospective buyers.
InsideEVs expert Tom Moloughney, known for his thorough range assessments, put the new Bolt to the test. While the official combined cycle rating stands at 262 miles and the EPA highway estimate at 232 miles, the vehicle surpassed the latter during Moloughney's 70 mph highway test. The model tested was a standard Bolt LT, equipped with 17-inch wheels and a 65-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, consistent across all trim levels. Operating conditions included recommended tire pressure, ambient temperatures between 71°F and 80°F, and an optimized climate control setting. The test, conducted on the New Jersey Turnpike—a route favored for its minimal early morning traffic and abundant charging options—yielded an impressive 243 miles with an estimated 1% and 2 miles remaining, demonstrating performance superior to its EPA highway rating. While a few more miles could have potentially been squeezed out, power output limitations prompted a cautious conclusion, with an average energy efficiency of 3.6 miles per kilowatt-hour and a total energy consumption of 66 kWh.
It is important to note the significant impact of speed on the Bolt's range. A separate 75 mph test by EV Motoring earlier this year, involving a comparable vehicle under similar weather conditions, resulted in a notably reduced range of 197 miles and an efficiency of 2.8 mi/kWh. This stark comparison underscores how increased speed diminishes an EV's range. Nevertheless, the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, with its sub-$30,000 starting price, commendable real-world range, and practical charging capabilities, presents itself as an excellent option for daily commutes. It’s a pity, however, that General Motors plans a limited production run for this promising model.
