Marco Wittmann, a two-time DTM champion, recently confronted what he described as the most demanding race weekend of his career. At the Oschersleben event, a severe gastrointestinal illness struck the BMW factory driver, leading to a significant weight loss of five kilograms within just four days.

Wittmann reflected on the rapid and severe onset of his illness, expressing bewilderment regarding its origin. He humorously speculated that it might have been a delayed reaction to the end of his family vacation. The illness severely affected his ability to retain food or medication, contributing to his substantial weight reduction.

Navigating Dietary Challenges and Medical Interventions

To cope with his condition during the race weekend, Wittmann meticulously managed his diet, consuming easily digestible foods like plain pasta and carrots. He also received intravenous fluid therapy, administered by doctors familiar to his team principal, Torsten Schubert. This was done within anti-doping regulations, primarily after qualifying sessions to allow for recovery time.

During this period, Wittmann received immense support from his Schubert team. Team boss Schubert handled public appearances, signing autographs and interacting with fans, while Wittmann conserved his energy, mostly resting in the team truck. He limited his interactions to essential meetings with engineers, prioritizing his recovery for the races.

Despite his debilitating illness, Wittmann displayed astonishing performance. He outpaced his teammate, Kelvin van der Linde, in both qualifying sessions and achieved his best starting position in nearly a year. In the main race, he fiercely challenged Thomas Preining for a podium spot, ultimately securing an impressive fourth place.

Following this, teams will relocate to the Chang International Circuit in Buriram for the final test, taking place two weeks prior to the opening round. Exact dates for these tests are yet to be announced.
