Tesla has issued a recall affecting a mere 15 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. The reason behind this recall is not a widespread mechanical defect or an immediate safety risk, but rather the accidental sale of Canadian-market vehicles to US customers. These vehicles, designed to meet Canadian safety specifications, do not align with the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Manufacturing and Regulatory Variations
Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y vehicles are produced in various global facilities, including Shanghai and Berlin, with each plant tailoring its output to the safety standards of the destination country. Due to minor discrepancies in safety requirements between Canada and the United States, a small consignment of Canadian-spec models was mistakenly delivered to US buyers. This cross-border mix-up rendered these vehicles non-compliant with American regulations.
