Hyundai's Latest Patent Hints at an Off-Road Electric SUV








A recent design patent has emerged, providing a potential glimpse into Hyundai's upcoming rugged, body-on-frame SUV. This development follows the unveiling of the Boulder Concept at the New York Auto Show, which served as a precursor to the brand's initial body-on-frame offering in the US market.
The Boulder Concept was envisioned as an "SUV-shaped design preview," according to Hyundai, though the company's first body-on-frame vehicle will be a midsize pickup. SangYup Lee, Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design Center, characterized the Boulder Concept as a tribute to the adventurous, off-road lifestyle. Developed by Hyundai's Southern California design team, the concept was specifically tailored for enthusiasts of off-road driving, featuring an aggressive styling reminiscent of a modified Ford Bronco, complete with oversized 37-inch tires, unique safari-style fixed upper windows, coach-style doors, and numerous other enhancements for extreme terrain.
A newly filed design patent in India exhibits a strong resemblance to the Boulder Concept, albeit with subtle modifications. The design maintains the boxy, upright SUV silhouette and most of its distinctive features, including the coach doors and large tires. Notably, the grille is now predominantly enclosed, a departure from the Boulder's open, slatted design, which suggests the vehicle could be a battery-electric model. Additionally, it incorporates sleek LED headlights, in contrast to the Boulder's more prominent stacked vertical lighting. This patent, submitted by Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation, was filed on May 19, 2026. Hyundai's body-on-frame pickup is one of 36 new vehicles slated for launch in North America by 2030. The future production of this off-road SUV, however, remains uncertain. While powertrain specifications are yet to be confirmed, the midsize pickup is expected to utilize a new platform supporting all-electric, plug-in hybrid, and extended-range electric variations.
