Solar Energy Outpaces Coal and Wind in May, EIA Data Reveals

According to recently released data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), solar-generated electricity significantly surpassed both coal and wind power during May. This marks a notable shift in the energy landscape, highlighted by a review conducted by the SUN DAY Campaign.
Renewable energy sources demonstrated substantial growth in electrical generation. During the initial five months of 2026, renewable electricity production increased by 10.1% year-over-year. This surge was primarily driven by utility-scale solar, which saw a 21.6% rise, followed by small-scale solar (up 12.8%), hydropower (up 10.8%), and wind power (up 4.8%). In contrast, the output from nuclear and natural gas plants grew at a slower pace of 1.3% and 2.5%, respectively, while electricity from coal facilities experienced a 10.9% decrease. Combined, wind and solar, including small-scale installations, contributed over 22.2% of the total US electrical production. Specifically, in May 2026, utility-scale and small-scale solar generated 47,147 GWh, exceeding coal's 45,119 GWh and wind's 41,157 GWh. Overall, renewables accounted for 30.3% of total US electrical generation in the first five months of 2026, an increase from 28.2% the previous year.
Looking ahead, significant expansion in renewable capacity is projected. Between June 2025 and May 2026, utility-scale solar capacity increased by 27,995.1 MW, small-scale solar by 6,664.3 MW, and wind by 10,252.6 MW, bringing the total renewable capacity addition to 44,711.8 MW. Additionally, utility-scale battery storage capacity grew by 16,551.8 MW. While coal and nuclear capacities saw slight declines, natural gas capacity increased by 6,289.0 MW. By May 2027, the EIA anticipates renewable energy's share of total US utility-scale generating capacity to reach 37.0%. Solar power alone is projected to contribute 43,971.9 MW, increasing its share to 16.1%, and wind power is expected to add 9,414.4 MW, including offshore wind. The SUN DAY Campaign predicts that with continued small-scale solar growth, renewable energy's total installed capacity could reach approximately 542,096.3 MW by June 2027, surpassing natural gas capacity. Furthermore, battery energy storage is expected to increase by nearly 48%, reaching 72,002.0 MW by June 2027, providing a substantial boost to clean energy infrastructure.
