Six Flags Magic Mountain Unveils Massive Solar Carport Installation

Six Flags Magic Mountain has officially launched an impressive 12.37-megawatt solar carport system, setting a new benchmark as California's largest installation of its kind. This pioneering endeavor is projected to generate sufficient electricity annually to meet the combined energy demands of the amusement park and its aquatic counterpart, Hurricane Harbor Los Angeles.
Six Flags Magic Mountain Embraces Solar Innovation with State-of-the-Art Carport
In an ambitious move towards environmental stewardship, Six Flags Magic Mountain, situated in Valencia, California, has transformed its expansive parking facilities into a significant renewable energy source. The amusement park has partnered with Solar Optimum to deploy an advanced 12.37-megawatt solar carport installation, now recognized as the largest in California. This monumental project is engineered to produce approximately 20.8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity each year, an amount anticipated to fully offset the annual power consumption of both Six Flags Magic Mountain and the adjacent Hurricane Harbor Los Angeles.
The cutting-edge installation comprises 22,908 bifacial solar panels, meticulously arranged across 36 distinct carport structures. These innovative panels are capable of harnessing sunlight from both their upper and lower surfaces, optimizing energy capture by utilizing light reflected from the ground. Spanning an expansive area of approximately 637,000 square feet, these carports offer shade to roughly 4,315 parking spaces, catering to 3,544 guest vehicles and 771 employee vehicles. Beyond providing a cooler return for park visitors on warm days, the project also integrates 109 electric vehicle (EV) charging connectors, catering to both guests and staff, further promoting sustainable transportation.
To ensure a consistent and reliable energy supply, the system incorporates a 2 MW/8 MWh battery storage solution, capable of discharging power for approximately four hours at its rated output. While the parks remain connected to Southern California Edison's grid, allowing them to draw power when generation is low and export surplus electricity when needed, the ultimate vision is to achieve complete annual electricity independence. Construction on this landmark project, a collaboration with Solar Optimum and DSD Renewables, commenced on November 1, 2023. This initiative builds upon the success of prior solar installations at other Six Flags locations, including Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Northern California and Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, underscoring the company's sustained commitment to green energy solutions. By utilizing existing parking areas, Six Flags demonstrates an ingenious approach to land use, simultaneously providing vehicle shade and generating clean electricity.
This initiative by Six Flags Magic Mountain exemplifies how large-scale entertainment venues can champion environmental responsibility. By integrating renewable energy solutions into their infrastructure, companies not only reduce their carbon footprint but also set a powerful precedent for sustainability within their industries. The dual benefits of clean energy generation and enhanced visitor experience, through shaded parking and EV charging, highlight a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes both ecological health and consumer convenience. This project serves as an inspiring blueprint for other businesses seeking to make meaningful contributions to a greener future.
