Porsche Explores Realistic Simulated Shifting for Electric Vehicles





Porsche, a renowned automotive manufacturer, is embarking on a new direction concerning the driving experience of its electric vehicles. Despite previously expressing skepticism about simulated gear shifts in EVs, the company has now developed a sophisticated system that replicates the sensation of traditional transmission changes with remarkable accuracy. A year ago, Porsche voiced a clear stance against integrating artificial shifting into electric vehicles, even publicly critiquing other manufacturers like Hyundai for implementing such features in models like the Ioniq 5 N. However, internal developments at Porsche have led to a re-evaluation of this position. Recent insights from a ride-along in a Porsche Cayenne EV prototype revealed that the company has not only warmed to the concept but has also engineered an advanced simulation system. This system generates a comprehensive array of simulated engine sounds and mechanical shift feedback, so convincing that even seasoned engineers found it difficult to differentiate from actual gear changes.
The engineering team behind the Cayenne EV has dedicated significant effort to capture the distinct auditory profile of the V8 engine, aiming to replicate it for the electric variant. According to Sascha Niesen, the validation manager for the prototype program, the development process involved meticulously recording both internal cabin noises and external exhaust sounds from the traditional V8. This extensive audio data was then used to create an authentic simulated engine note for the EV. Niesen elaborated that a crucial aspect of this development was adapting the sound to the wider 'rev range' characteristic of electric motors, and how virtual gears could leverage this expanded range.
Porsche's commitment to delivering an emotional driving experience is well-known, where visual, auditory, and tactile sensations play a vital role. The engineers recognized that simply transplanting V8 sounds into an EV would not suffice; the overall feel needed to be preserved. This understanding led to the exploration of virtual gear shifts. Niesen mentioned driving a concept vehicle equipped with this feature earlier in the year, admitting that despite initial skepticism, the simulation of a torque converter gearbox was so precise that he 'could not tell the difference.' While acknowledging the engineering paradox of adding simulated shifts to an EV, Niesen drew parallels to the historical introduction of CVT transmissions, where artificial shift points were sometimes added to make them feel more conventional.
The company emphasizes that if this virtual gear feature is adopted for future EVs, it will be an optional engagement for the driver.
