Palou Successfully Concludes IndyCar IR-28 Oval Validation Test at Indianapolis

IndyCar Series' five-time champion, Alex Palou, successfully wrapped up the second day of the IR-28 oval validation test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Representing Honda teams for Chip Ganassi Racing, Palou's session concluded 15 minutes ahead of schedule, having completed the team's comprehensive checklist. This critical testing phase aimed to refine the next-generation vehicle for the 2028 season, focusing on key performance metrics and driver feedback.
Palou's test session followed the initial oval runs conducted by Alexander Rossi of ECR, who represented Chevrolet on the previous day. While Rossi contended with challenging conditions of 90-degree heat and high humidity, Palou benefited from a notable temperature drop of nearly 10 degrees on Thursday due to an approaching cold front. This variation in environmental conditions provided invaluable data for IndyCar and Dallara, the chassis manufacturer, offering a broader understanding of the car's performance across different climates.
The primary goal of these tests was not to achieve blistering lap times but rather to thoroughly evaluate various aerodynamic setups and extreme ride-height adjustments. Despite this focus, Palou observed a natural increase in the car's velocity as the session progressed. He remarked, "We accumulated a significantly higher number of laps than anticipated given the weather, and the car's responsiveness was commendable. We actually gained over 2 miles an hour throughout the day, and that wasn't even our primary objective."
Drawing comparisons to the car's initial debut on the IMS road course last month, Palou highlighted a greater sense of familiarity with the oval configuration. He commented, "On the road course, you tend to wrestle with the car more, and it felt quite distinct. Here, despite its smoothness, it remarkably resembles our current vehicle." Later in the day, the team fine-tuned the car for a final run, which resulted in an unexpected speed increase of over 1 mph, a gain that surprised Palou considering it wasn't a dedicated qualifying setup. Furthermore, the team utilized the session to tackle concerns about cockpit heat, an issue reported by Rossi during Wednesday's test. Palou noted, "While temperature posed a challenge for Rossi yesterday, we implemented adjustments to open up additional cooling mechanisms available on this car, which are absent in our current model. The results were highly effective. So, it was more about minor refinements than significant performance changes, unlike the road course experience."
