Driving the Future of Energy Storage: A Landmark Collaboration
Securing a Domestic Cell Supply for Expansion
NeoVolta Power has successfully finalized a long-term agreement with SK On to procure 9 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. This crucial supply, scheduled from 2027 to 2031, will be instrumental in fueling the growth and operational capacity of NeoVolta's manufacturing facility located in Pendergrass, Georgia.
Synergistic Production for the Energy Sector
The LFP cells provided by SK On will be transported to NeoVolta's Georgia plant, where they will be integrated into advanced battery energy storage systems (BESS). These systems are designed to cater to a diverse range of applications, including commercial, industrial, and large-scale utility projects, with SK On poised to become the primary LFP pouch-cell supplier for NeoVolta.
Phased Partnership for Enhanced Capacity
The agreement encompasses an initial firm commitment for 9 GWh of cells. Furthermore, both companies have established a preliminary understanding for an additional 9 GWh supply, which would involve NeoVolta converting these cells into battery packs for subsequent purchase by SK On. This potential second phase could elevate the total collaboration to 18 GWh between 2027 and 2031, although the latter portion is contingent on future market demands and commercial terms.
Leadership's Vision for Domestic Energy Independence
Ardes Johnson, CEO of NeoVolta, emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership, highlighting its role in the company's expansion into large-scale energy storage and the development of its US manufacturing infrastructure. He noted that the initial agreement guarantees a consistent supply of domestically produced LFP cells, facilitating the expansion of their Pendergrass operations. The broader collaboration further positions NeoVolta to produce energy storage packs for SK On, reinforcing their commitment to a robust domestic energy storage platform designed to meet increasing demand for reliable, high-performance BESS solutions.
Advantages of LFP Battery Technology
LFP batteries are particularly well-suited for stationary energy storage applications due to their extended cycle life and inherent thermal stability. Unlike some other lithium-ion chemistries, LFP batteries do not rely on nickel or cobalt. While they may have a lower energy density, this characteristic is less critical for stationary storage systems where physical size and weight constraints are less restrictive.
Scaling Up US Manufacturing Capabilities
NeoVolta initiated its US battery manufacturing operations in January, with the Pendergrass facility's inaugural production line designed for an annual output of 2 GWh, with potential for expansion up to 8 GWh. This initial line is currently undergoing commissioning and ramp-up processes. The partnership with SK On is expected to facilitate the establishment of a second production line, specifically for pouch-format LFP cells, aiming to achieve a total annual production capacity of up to 8 GWh by 2028.
