Volkswagen's Electric Camper Van: The ID. California Cruise

Volkswagen has proudly introduced its inaugural all-electric California camper, the ID. California Cruise, which made its public debut at the Caravan Salon 2026. This new vehicle marks a significant step for the company in expanding its electric vehicle lineup, particularly catering to the growing demand for sustainable travel options. Designed for comfort and utility, the ID. California Cruise is poised to transform the traditional camping experience with its innovative features and eco-conscious design.
The ID. California Cruise is built on the foundation of Volkswagen's popular ID. Buzz platform, integrating a host of amenities ideal for various outdoor activities, from brief weekend getaways to extended road trips. Its interior boasts a spacious fold-out bed measuring 2.03 meters by 1.20 meters, complete with blackout shades for privacy and ventilation grilles for air circulation. The design also incorporates flexible storage solutions, as highlighted in a detailed video review by "Autogefühl," demonstrating the ease of bed conversion and storage access. In collaboration with Stuff Bubble, known for its inflatable camping kitchen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has developed a system that allows for quick transformation of the van into a fully functional camper, with all components easily storable within the vehicle. Adding to its appeal, Volkswagen will include a set of camping chairs and a table with each purchase, enhancing the overall camping readiness.
Beyond its comfortable living space, the ID. California Cruise is equipped with advanced technological features to support a modern nomadic lifestyle. It offers both short and long-wheelbase variants and comes standard with an Interior Style Package, Comfort Package, and a PowerSocket discharge adapter for vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities. This feature allows the camper to serve as a mobile power bank, providing up to 3.6 kW of electricity for devices such as coffee makers, laptops, and even e-bikes. Additionally, the vehicle includes a specialized California mode for overnight stays and an "electric-trip" function within the California app, which helps users locate and navigate to charging stations. Powered by a 79 kWh battery in the short-wheelbase model, it achieves a WLTP range of up to 461 km, while the long-wheelbase version, with an 86 kWh battery, extends the range to 487 km. Although the US market may not receive this specific electric camper, a similar Tourer model is expected to join the 2027 ID. Buzz lineup. With a starting price of €60,761 in Germany, or approximately $70,500, and customer deliveries beginning in early 2027, the ID. California Cruise represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainable and adventurous travel.
This pioneering electric camper van from Volkswagen showcases a commitment to integrating environmental responsibility with practical design. By offering a vehicle that is both functional and eco-friendly, Volkswagen encourages a lifestyle of exploration and appreciation for nature, promoting cleaner travel and sustainable living. The ID. California Cruise exemplifies how innovation can lead to positive change, inspiring adventurers to embrace electric mobility for their journeys.
