Methanol-Powered Engine Offers Boost to Electric Vehicles

Horse Powertrain has introduced a groundbreaking methanol-fueled engine, designed to significantly enhance the capabilities of battery-electric vehicles. This advanced hybrid system integrates innovative axial-flux motors, which are notably more compact and powerful than their conventional radial-flux counterparts. The D20 Methanol range extender, weighing a mere 375 pounds, is engineered to produce an impressive 141 horsepower, marking a pivotal step forward in the evolution of automotive power solutions.
The efficiency of this powertrain is remarkable, featuring a 47-percent fuel-to-energy conversion ratio. This means only 5.2 gallons of methanol are needed to fully recharge a 40-kilowatt-hour battery, showcasing its economic and environmental benefits. Additionally, the system includes a high-energy ignition that facilitates ultra-lean methanol combustion, adhering to stringent European and Chinese emissions standards. The integration of axial-flux motors, directly mounted to the engine's crankshaft, provides a compact, disk-like design that contrasts sharply with the larger, cylindrical radial-flux motors, allowing for two rotors to operate around a single stator efficiently.
Fortune Zhao, CTO of Horse Powertrain, emphasized the innovative nature of the D20 Methanol, highlighting its role as a platform for cutting-edge technologies. The strategic use of an axial-flux motor achieves exceptional compactness and power density, positioning this technology as a pioneer in mass-market automotive powertrains. The motor boasts an electrical efficiency of 96.4 percent, translating to an impressive energy conversion rate where 2.1 kilowatt-hours of methanol yield 1 kilowatt-hour of electrical energy.
This development by Horse Powertrain underscores a commitment to innovation in combustion engine technology, aiming to reduce emissions and improve efficiency in the automotive sector. While the D20 Methanol may not immediately reach all markets, the advancements it embodies signal a positive trajectory towards more sustainable and high-performing vehicle technologies globally. The continuous pursuit of such eco-friendly and powerful solutions represents a hopeful future for transportation, aligning technological progress with environmental responsibility.
