McLaren's innovative MCL-HY LMDh challenger has successfully completed a gruelling 30-hour endurance simulation, mimicking the demanding conditions of the Le Mans 24 Hours. This pivotal test, conducted at Spain's MotorLand Aragon circuit in July, underscores the British manufacturer's robust preparation for its upcoming entry into the World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar category.
The extensive testing regimen is a testament to McLaren's commitment to developing a formidable contender for the WEC. With a newly developed three-litre twin-turbo V6 engine and a cohesive team structure, the program aims to ensure the MCL-HY is not only mechanically sound but also capable of sustained high-performance under race conditions. Endurance Testing Success and Development Progress
The McLaren MCL-HY LMDh prototype has successfully endured a 30-hour test at the Aragon circuit, mirroring the challenge of the Le Mans 24 Hours. This significant milestone was achieved just months after the vehicle's initial shakedown at Varano and subsequent full tests at Imola and Magny-Cours. According to James Barclay, Executive Director of McLaren Endurance Racing, the test proceeded without any critical failures, allowing the team to meticulously check and adjust components as if in a live race scenario, emphasizing their proactive approach to potential issues.
This early endurance simulation was crucial for identifying and addressing any fundamental design or operational challenges. Unlike some competitors who adapted existing engines, McLaren's MCL-HY features an all-new three-litre twin-turbo V6 engine developed in collaboration with AutoTecnica Motori. The successful completion of this rigorous test, which also included further running at Silverstone, provides invaluable data and confidence for the team as they refine the car's performance and aerodynamic stability ahead of homologation.
Team Cohesion and Driver Line-Up Strategy
Beyond mechanical testing, the Aragon session proved vital for fostering team cohesion among staff from various backgrounds, including United Autosports, Formula E, and Formula 1. James Barclay noted the remarkable camaraderie and operational fluidity achieved by the diverse team, indicating that despite being in only their fifth test, they operated with the synchronicity of a much more established group. McLaren has already confirmed Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor as initial drivers for the upcoming season, with development drivers Gregoire Saucy and Richard Verschoor, alongside Ben Hanley, also contributing to testing. While additional drivers have been signed, their announcements are staggered to respect existing contracts. The team is also evaluating the optimal number of drivers per car for different WEC races, weighing the advantages of two versus three drivers for six-hour events versus longer races like Le Mans, Qatar, and Bahrain, ensuring a strategic and flexible approach to their driver roster.
