McLaren Successfully Completes Grueling 30-Hour Endurance Test with New LMDh Hypercar

McLaren's innovative MCL-HY LMDh vehicle has triumphantly concluded a 30-hour endurance simulation, gearing up for its debut in the World Endurance Championship's Hypercar category next season.
This British constructor confirmed that its LMDh hybrid prototype, a collaborative effort with Dallara Automobili, endured over 30 hours of continuous operation at Spain's MotorLand Aragon circuit in July. This extensive test was designed to mirror the demanding conditions of the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours. The vehicle's initial shakedown occurred in May at Varano, Italy, followed by subsequent testing at Imola and Magny-Cours, making the Aragon session only its third comprehensive outing. Further evaluations were conducted recently with a three-day run at Silverstone.
James Barclay, Executive Director of McLaren Endurance Racing and team principal of the WEC squad, noted the absence of any critical issues during the Aragon test. He emphasized that the team approached the simulation with a race-day mindset, pausing only for quick, precautionary checks rather than extensive repairs. While specific mileage figures remain undisclosed to maintain a competitive edge, Barclay confirmed the car had already covered distances typical of a six-hour WEC event prior to Aragon. He expressed satisfaction with the early endurance success, highlighting the valuable insights gained. Barclay also stressed the significance of their new three-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, developed with AutoTecnica Motori, differentiating it from competitors who often adapt existing power units. The Aragon test also served to foster team cohesion, integrating personnel from various motorsport backgrounds, leading to a strong sense of camaraderie within the group.
The aerodynamic design of the MCL-HY is expected to remain largely consistent before its homologation later this year. Key drivers including Mikkel Jensen, Laurens Vanthoor, Gregoire Saucy, Richard Verschoor, and veteran Ben Hanley have already participated in testing. McLaren has engaged additional drivers whose identities will be revealed later due to existing contractual obligations. The team is also contemplating whether to utilize two or three drivers per car for six-hour WEC events, contrasting with the mandatory three for the Le Mans, Qatar, and Bahrain 10-hour races.
