Lexus Discontinues TX550h+ Plug-in Hybrid for 2027

Lexus has announced significant changes to its TX lineup for the 2027 model year, notably discontinuing the TX550h+ plug-in hybrid variant. This decision follows a period of relatively low sales for the PHEV model compared to its gasoline and standard hybrid counterparts. Despite this alteration, the TX series will continue to offer its conventional gasoline-powered TX350 and the hybrid TX500h, both of which will receive subtle enhancements. These updates include broader availability of the Matador Red Mica paint color across more trims and a streamlined badging design for the TX500h, aiming to simplify its aesthetic appeal.
Lexus Streamlines TX Lineup: PHEV Model Phased Out, Remaining Variants Enhanced
Lexus launched the TX in 2024, strategically positioning this mid-size three-row SUV to bridge the gap between its RX and LX models. The initial offering included a purely gasoline-powered version alongside two hybrid options: a standard hybrid and a more intricate plug-in hybrid system, known as the TX550h+. However, for the 2027 model year, Lexus is implementing several adjustments, the most impactful being the cessation of the TX550h+ plug-in hybrid.
The company confirmed the discontinuation of the TX's PHEV model, with the 2026 iteration marking its final production run. While Lexus did not explicitly state the rationale, sales figures provide a clear indication. In 2025, out of 57,346 TX units sold, merely 953 were the PHEV model. In stark contrast, the hybrid TX500h achieved 10,740 sales. Even with projected increases in 2026, the TX550h+ still represents a marginal fraction of the overall TX sales, significantly trailing the standard hybrid variant. This likely points to a strategic decision to streamline offerings based on consumer demand and market performance.
Despite the departure of the plug-in hybrid, Lexus is introducing new features across the remaining TX models for 2027. Following its successful introduction as an F Sport trim exclusive in 2026, the striking Matador Red Mica paint option will now be available for non-F Sport models in 2027. Additionally, F Sport variants can now be equipped with eye-catching red-painted brake calipers. The non-hybrid TX350 will see minor refinements to its vacuum brake booster tuning and the brake hold function, while its 20-inch aluminum wheels will feature a refreshed darker gray finish. Meanwhile, the TX500h will simplify its rear badging, replacing the "DIRECT4" emblem with a more concise "AWD" badge.
The powertrains for the TX350 and TX500h remain unchanged. The TX350 is powered by a robust turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four engine, delivering 275 horsepower, and is available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The TX500h, on the other hand, combines this engine with two electric motors to produce a potent 366 horsepower, exclusively offered with all-wheel drive. The 2027 Lexus TX350 is expected to start at $58,890, with all-wheel drive costing an additional $1600. The TX500h's entry-level model, the F Sport Performance Premium, will begin at $72,410. Lexus anticipates the 2027 TX models will arrive at dealerships before the close of this year.
The automotive industry is constantly evolving, with manufacturers making strategic adjustments to their product lines based on market trends, consumer preferences, and technological advancements. Lexus's decision to discontinue the TX550h+ plug-in hybrid underscores the importance of sales performance in shaping future offerings. While plug-in hybrids offer a compelling bridge to full electrification, their success is often dependent on factors such as pricing, range, and charging infrastructure. This move by Lexus highlights a pragmatic approach to its SUV portfolio, prioritizing models that resonate more strongly with its customer base. It also signals a continued focus on conventional hybrids, which have historically performed well for the brand. For consumers, this refined lineup means a clearer choice within the TX series, focusing on proven powertrains and enhanced aesthetic options.
