Leading EV Solid-State Battery Innovators Form Alliance to Accelerate Mass Production







In a significant move poised to transform the electric vehicle landscape, two industry frontrunners in solid-state battery technology have announced a pivotal collaboration. This alliance aims to bridge the gap between groundbreaking innovation and large-scale manufacturing, ultimately making advanced battery solutions more accessible for electric vehicles. The partnership is expected to drive forward the development and adoption of solid-state batteries, which promise substantial improvements over current lithium-ion technology.
Solid-state batteries are lauded for their potential to offer superior energy density, extended driving ranges, and significantly faster charging times compared to conventional lithium-ion counterparts. However, the path to widespread adoption has been hampered by considerable manufacturing hurdles. A primary challenge involves identifying a solid electrolyte that is both highly conductive and resilient enough to withstand operational stress without cracking or breaking. Additionally, the production processes for these advanced batteries tend to be more complex and costly.
To address these challenges, South Korean battery giant SK On and US-based Factorial Energy have decided to pool their expertise and resources. Their joint objective is to streamline the mass production of solid-state batteries. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was officially signed, outlining plans to integrate Factorial's cutting-edge solid-state cell technology into SK On's vast global manufacturing network. A key initial focus of this partnership will be to meticulously evaluate how SK On's existing manufacturing facilities and battery plants can be optimized to support the future development and production of solid-state batteries.
The collaboration will leverage Factorial's proprietary FEST solid-state battery technology alongside SK On's profound experience in battery development and manufacturing. This synergy is intended to assess the commercial viability and scalability of Factorial's technology. Siyu Huang, CEO of Factorial, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that "A battery breakthrough only matters if it can be manufactured at scale." She further highlighted that SK On's extensive manufacturing infrastructure and expertise will be instrumental in integrating solid-state battery technology into global production ecosystems.
Factorial's high-energy-density batteries are designed to offer more compact, lighter, and ultimately more efficient power solutions across various sectors, including electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and defense applications. The company recently announced successful real-world testing of its FEST solid-state battery cells in North America, conducted in partnership with Stellantis. These cells were integrated into a Dodge Charger Daytona prototype, built on Stellantis' STLA Large platform, demonstrating their practical application in an electric vehicle. Stellantis previously reported that Factorial's 77Ah FEST cells exhibited an impressive energy density of 375 Wh/kg, maintaining performance over more than 600 cycles. Furthermore, these cells achieved ultra-fast charging capabilities, reaching 15% to 90% charge in just 18 minutes, and performed reliably across extreme temperatures ranging from -30°C to 45°C, with a discharge rate of up to 4C.
Factorial is actively collaborating with several major automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia, and Stellantis, to accelerate the commercialization of solid-state EV batteries. Last autumn, Mercedes-Benz showcased the potential of Factorial's technology by driving a modified EQS over 745 miles (1,200 km) on a single charge using these advanced cells. Markus Schäfer, Mercedes' chief technology officer, hailed Factorial's battery technology as a potential "gamechanger" for electric vehicles. Meanwhile, SK On is a key supplier of EV batteries to leading manufacturers such as Hyundai Motor Group, Ford, and Volkswagen, boasting an annual global production capacity exceeding 200 GWh, with approximately half of that located in the United States. This new alliance follows Factorial's earlier partnership with South Korea's POSCO FUTURE M, established last December, to develop advanced materials specifically for all-solid-state batteries.
This strategic alliance between SK On and Factorial Energy represents a pivotal step towards overcoming the manufacturing complexities of solid-state batteries. By combining Factorial's innovative cell technology with SK On's extensive production capabilities, the partnership aims to accelerate the commercialization of these high-performance batteries, promising a new era of electric vehicles with enhanced range, faster charging, and improved efficiency.
