Volvo Discontinues Lidar on EX90/ES90, Compensates Owners

Volvo has officially announced the removal of lidar technology from its upcoming EX90 and ES90 electric vehicles. The company will provide financial compensation to customers who pre-ordered these models, as the promised lidar-based functionalities will not be delivered. This decision follows the termination of its partnership with lidar supplier Luminar due to supply chain issues and unfulfilled contractual obligations. Despite the change, Volvo assures that the vehicles maintain a high level of safety through their existing advanced sensor suite.

The Swedish automaker confirmed the cessation of its lidar partnership with Luminar, impacting the EX90 and ES90 models. These vehicles were initially equipped with Luminar Iris lidar units on their roofs, with the expectation of integrating software features that would leverage this technology. However, these features never materialized and will now be permanently absent. Henrik Juel Teige, a spokesperson for Volvo Cars Norway, articulated the company's decision, citing the termination of the collaboration with their lidar supplier and the discontinuation of plans to develop lidar-based functions for the affected car lines.

In light of this development, Volvo has initiated a compensation program for customers who had purchased these vehicles under the expectation of lidar integration. The compensation varies by region: Norwegian customers will receive NOK 18,000 (approximately $1,900), while Swedish buyers saw a price adjustment of SEK 16,000 (around $1,600) on their pending orders. In the United States, owners are being offered about $1,500 in various optional packages, such as SiriusXM subscriptions, charging credits, a tire-and-wheel protection plan, or a maintenance package. Dutch consumers are eligible for €1,500, and Canadian purchasers will receive C$2,000. This measure acknowledges that customers effectively paid for hardware that ultimately became non-functional.

The decision to discontinue lidar integration stemmed from issues that began to surface in the previous fall. Reports from November indicated Volvo's intention to abandon lidar for its 2026 models, leading to significant dissatisfaction from Luminar. The contract between the two companies was officially terminated on November 14, with Volvo citing supply chain vulnerabilities and Luminar's failure to meet its contractual obligations. Subsequently, Luminar filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2025. With its supplier no longer solvent or capable of delivering and supporting the sensor technology, Volvo determined that the previously marketed lidar-based features could not be implemented.

Volvo maintains that the EX90 and ES90 models retain their robust safety standards even without lidar. The automaker stated that its products provide a high level of safety and driver assistance capabilities, supported by powerful core computing and an advanced array of sensors, irrespective of lidar inclusion. The existing sensor configuration includes five radars, eight external cameras, two internal cameras, and sixteen ultrasonic sensors, ensuring that the removal of lidar constitutes the elimination of one sensory layer rather than compromising the entire safety system.

This situation has drawn comparisons to debates within the automotive industry, particularly concerning vision-only autonomous driving systems advocated by figures like Elon Musk. However, Volvo's continued reliance on a comprehensive sensor suite, including radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors, diverges from a purely camera-based approach. The company's action demonstrates a strategic shift away from a single expensive sensor while leveraging its other sophisticated detection technologies to uphold vehicle safety.

Kia EV3 Pre-Orders Launch in Mexico Ahead of US Debut

Kia's upcoming EV3 electric SUV is now available for pre-order in Mexico, marking a strategic step before its entry into the United States market. The vehicle's production in Mexico is supported by a substantial $649 million investment from the Korean automaker, reinforcing its dedication to expanding electric vehicle manufacturing in the region. This development underscores Kia's commitment to making electric mobility more accessible and diversifying its global footprint.

Kia EV3's Mexican Launch and US Market Anticipation

In a significant announcement made on Wednesday morning during President Claudia Sheinbaum's "Mañanera del Pueblo" press briefing, Horacia Chavez, Kia Mexico's managing director, confirmed the company's substantial investment of $649 million. This capital injection is earmarked for the production of electric vehicles within Mexico. Following the successful assembly of initial prototypes in March, Kia officially opened its pre-order books this week for the EV3, a compact electric SUV slated for Mexican manufacturing.

The 2027 Kia EV3 is designed to cater to a range of preferences, offering two main configurations: the Standard Range EX and the Extended Range SXL. The former is equipped with a 58.3 kWh battery, projected to deliver a WLTP range of up to 436 km (approximately 270 miles). For those seeking longer distances, the Extended Range SXL boasts an 81.4 kWh battery, extending its WLTP range to an impressive 605 km (around 375 miles). Enthusiasts can place pre-orders for the EV3 SXL through Mercado Libre, with pricing starting at 767,700 pesos, which translates to roughly $44,000 USD.

For the United States market, the 2027 Kia EV3 will introduce five distinct trims later this year: Light, Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT. The entry-level Light variant will utilize the same 58.3 kWh battery as its Mexican counterpart, offering an estimated EPA range of up to 220 miles. Higher-tier trims, including Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT, will feature the larger 81.4 kWh extended-range battery, promising an estimated EPA range of up to 320 miles for the Front Wheel Drive models. All-wheel drive (AWD) will be an optional upgrade for the Wind and Land trims, becoming a standard feature on the GT-Line and GT variants.

Built on the advanced 400V E-GMP platform, the EV3 Light model with the 58.3 kWh battery is capable of rapid charging, achieving a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 29 minutes. The 81.4 kWh battery requires only slightly more time, around 31 minutes, for the same charging interval. Furthermore, Kia's electric SUV will integrate a native NACS charge port, enhancing charging convenience for North American consumers. The official launch of the 2027 EV3 in the US is anticipated by the end of the year, with pricing details expected soon. It is projected to start at approximately $35,000, positioning it as a highly competitive and affordable option within the US electric vehicle market.

The launch of the Kia EV3 signifies a pivotal moment for electric vehicle adoption, particularly in North America. By offering a compelling blend of range, features, and an accessible price point, Kia is poised to attract a broader demographic to the EV segment. This strategic move, coupled with local production in Mexico, not only supports regional economic growth but also streamlines supply chains, potentially leading to more competitive pricing and availability. It highlights a proactive approach by traditional automakers to challenge the dominance of established EV players and accelerate the transition towards sustainable transportation.
