The JCB Hydromax has made a significant leap forward in high-speed mobility, establishing a provisional world land speed record of 406.320 miles per hour on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Rigorous Record-Setting Process on the Salt Flats
To comply with the strict regulations set by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the 32-foot Hydromax executed two runs across the Bonneville course on a recent day. These runs were conducted in opposing directions within a one-hour timeframe. The vehicle achieved an average speed of 400.623 miles per hour on its initial pass, followed by an even more impressive 412.135 miles per hour on the second run. This resulted in a combined average of 406.320 miles per hour over the crucial flying kilometer distance, solidifying its place in history.
Surpassing Previous Benchmarks in Hydrogen and Diesel Power
This new record significantly overshadows the prior FIA-recognized hydrogen internal combustion record of 185.5 miles per hour, which was set by the BMW H2R in 2004. The Hydromax's achievement falls under the FIA’s Category A, Group XIV, Class 7 World Flying Record Start Land Speed Record. While awaiting official certification from the FIA, this performance stands as a testament to engineering prowess. Furthermore, the Hydromax's speed also exceeds JCB's own diesel land speed record of 350.092 miles per hour, achieved by the JCB Dieselmax in 2006, also driven by Green. This new iteration utilizes an engine that boasts zero CO₂ emissions from the tailpipe. The immense power for the Hydromax is generated by two of JCB's commercially available hydrogen "digger" engines. These engines have been finely tuned to collectively produce an astonishing 1,600 horsepower and were manufactured at the company’s engine facility in Foston, Derbyshire, England. JCB emphasizes that these are essentially the same hydrogen combustion units currently integrated into their construction machinery, a result of a substantial £100 million investment in hydrogen development programs. JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford, who has been a key figure in the hydrogen engine initiative, positioned the Hydromax's success as a continuation of the Dieselmax's legacy two decades ago at Bonneville. Today, we have replicated that success, this time with engines fueled by hydrogen." Wing Commander Andy Green, already celebrated as the fastest human on Earth with a record of 763.035 miles per hour and the sole individual to break the sound barrier on land, expressed his honor in piloting the Hydromax. He stated, "Bonneville is the spiritual home of land speed records, and the JCB Hydromax has now etched its name into that rich history." Prior to its record-breaking attempt, the Hydromax participated in the Southern California Timing Association’s Bonneville Speed Week. During this event, the vehicle achieved an average speed of 368.347 miles per hour in the Blown Gas Streamliner AA/BGS 500-plus cubic inch class. This established a new SCTA benchmark and served as an important early milestone in the car's ongoing development program.
