Geely and Renault Unveil Waterproof Engine for Hybrid Vehicles





A groundbreaking advancement in automotive engineering has emerged from the collaboration between Geely and Renault, through their joint venture, Horse Powertrain. They have introduced a novel 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, dubbed the B20, specifically engineered to function flawlessly even when submerged in considerable depths of water. This innovative power unit promises to redefine capabilities for vehicles operating in challenging environments.
The B20 engine is distinguished by its IPX8 certification, enabling it to operate effectively in water up to 1.1 meters (3.6 feet) deep. This feature is particularly beneficial for serious off-road enthusiasts who frequently encounter water crossings. Beyond its water resistance, the B20 is built to integrate seamlessly into various electrified vehicle architectures, including conventional hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and range-extended electric vehicles. It delivers a robust performance range of 188 to 248 horsepower and 300 to 380 Newton-meters (221 to 280 pound-feet) of torque, ensuring stable power delivery even when climbing extremely steep grades, up to 100 percent. The engine achieves its waterproofing through a comprehensively sealed structure, specialized sealing between the engine and transmission, and IPX8-rated electrical components and sensors. An intelligent control system automatically adjusts power output and throttle response upon detecting submersion, while an active dual-cooling system and a variable-displacement oil pump optimize temperature and oil flow under demanding conditions. Constructed from an aluminum block with an integrated exhaust manifold and a simplified balance-shaft system, the B20 prioritizes reducing noise, vibration, and harshness while enhancing durability. Weighing a mere 130 kilograms (287 pounds), it boasts direct injection, a Miller-cycle combustion process, and an impressive brake thermal efficiency of 48.4 percent, achieved through high-pressure injectors, high-tumble intake ports, and custom-designed pistons for improved fuel economy.
This pioneering engine is not merely a theoretical concept but is already actively powering a production model, the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700, a plug-in hybrid off-road vehicle exclusively available in China. This real-world application underscores the engine's practical viability and performance.
