GM Revitalizes Heavy-Duty Truck Powertrains for 2027




General Motors is poised to introduce substantial powertrain enhancements for its heavy-duty pickup trucks in the 2027 model year. These revisions, encompassing both gasoline and diesel engines, will be implemented before the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD models are released, which are projected for the 2029 model year.
Reports suggest that GM will replace the existing naturally aspirated 6.6-liter V8 L8T engine with a new L8S unit of the same displacement, anticipated to offer increased performance. Furthermore, the Duramax diesel engine lineup will see the L5P replaced by a new L6P model. While the current diesel unit delivers 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque from its 6.6-liter displacement, it remains to be seen how the specifications of the new L6P will evolve. This proactive approach underscores GM's commitment to improving the capabilities of its current heavy-duty truck offerings.
This initiative follows General Motors' recent investments in advanced internal combustion engine technology, totaling billions over the past few years.
