This partnership aims to tackle the formidable challenge of mass-producing solid-state batteries by leveraging SK On's existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing capabilities.
Accelerating the Adoption of Advanced Battery Technology
Factorial is recognized as a pioneer in the development of solid-state batteries, a technology poised to redefine electric vehicle performance. The company's semi-solid-state batteries are currently undergoing rigorous real-world testing in prototype electric vehicles from leading automotive brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Hyundai, showcasing their potential.
Demonstrated Performance: Real-World Testing of Factorial's Batteries
Earlier this year, a Mercedes-Benz EQS prototype equipped with Factorial's semi-solid-state battery achieved an remarkable 749 miles on a single charge, with an estimated 84 miles of range still available upon arrival. Similarly, Stellantis has integrated Factorial's battery into a prototype Dodge Charger Daytona for on-road evaluations, underscoring the promising performance of this advanced battery technology.
Overcoming Manufacturing Hurdles for Solid-State Batteries
Solid-state batteries offer substantial advantages, including higher energy density, faster charging times, and enhanced safety due to the use of solid electrolytes instead of flammable liquids. However, the path to commercialization has been fraught with difficulties, primarily the challenge of manufacturing these batteries at scale without compromising quality or introducing defects. This is where SK On's expertise becomes invaluable.
Leveraging SK On's Global Manufacturing Prowess
SK On is set to assess how its extensive global battery manufacturing infrastructure can be adapted and utilized to facilitate the mass production of Factorial's solid-state battery technology. Siyu Huang, CEO of Factorial, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating that true battery breakthroughs are only impactful if they can be manufactured on a large scale. She highlighted SK On's advanced facilities and expertise as crucial to integrating solid-state battery technology into the global production ecosystem.
SK On's Strategic Role in the EV Battery Market
SK On currently supplies batteries to major automotive players including Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Volkswagen, and Ferrari, boasting an impressive annual production capacity of approximately 200 gigawatt-hours worldwide, with half of that capacity located in the United States. Despite recent adjustments to its U.S. operations following shifts in EV incentives, SK On remains a dominant force in the battery market.
The Nature of Strategic Alliances in Battery Development
Factorial has also established similar non-binding agreements with other key players, such as LG Chem and South Korean battery material suppliers Philenergy and Posco Future M. These memoranda of understanding, including the one with SK On, are non-binding, allowing all parties to exit if the collaborative efforts do not yield significant manufacturing advancements, underscoring the exploratory and risk-mitigating nature of these high-stakes partnerships.
