EVgo Launches First Tesla Supercharging Station, Signaling Major Expansion

EVgo has officially inaugurated its first Tesla Supercharger station, strategically located in a Chicago grocery store parking lot. This development is a pivotal moment in the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, as EVgo embarks on a plan to introduce hundreds more such Tesla Supercharger stalls throughout the United States. This initiative promises to enhance accessibility and convenience for a growing number of EV drivers.
EVgo Unveils Advanced EV Charging Hub in Chicago
On a significant day for electric vehicle infrastructure, November 6, 2026, EVgo launched its first Supercharger station in Chicago. The facility, situated at the Riverside Square & River's Edge, specifically at 3145 S Ashland Avenue, represents a major leap forward in EV charging solutions. This pioneering station boasts 12 advanced fast-charging stalls, each capable of delivering up to 325 kW of power. Crucially, these stalls are equipped with both North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) plugs, thanks to integrated Magic Dock technology. This innovative feature allows a broad spectrum of electric vehicles, including non-Tesla models compatible with NACS, to charge seamlessly without requiring additional adapters. Tesla vehicle owners will find the station integrated into their in-car navigation and Trip Planner systems, while other EVgo fast chargers with NACS compatibility have been appearing in Tesla navigation since early September, provided third-party charging options are enabled. This strategic move aligns with EVgo's August announcement of a Supercharger rollout that could eventually support up to 500 kW charging capabilities. Badar Khan, CEO of EVgo, highlighted the significance of this expansion, stating that by catering to both Tesla and non-Tesla NACS drivers, EVgo effectively doubles its potential market reach, ensuring that EV drivers can charge their vehicles wherever and whenever needed. EVgo maintains ownership of these Superchargers, branding them as 'EVgo Superchargers,' while Tesla manages their operation and maintenance. The initial deployment of these sites is concentrated in Regency Centers shopping plazas, typically co-located with grocery stores, emphasizing convenience for users. Furthermore, EVgo is actively incorporating NACS plugs into its existing fast-charging network, a process initiated in 2025. The company targets the installation of 500 such stalls across the U.S. by the end of 2026, separate from the Supercharger stalls. Over the subsequent two years, EVgo plans to ensure that every new site built from 2023 onwards includes at least one NACS plug.
The inauguration of EVgo's first Tesla Supercharger station is a landmark event for the electric vehicle industry, signaling a decisive shift towards a more integrated and accessible charging ecosystem. By embracing both NACS and CCS standards, EVgo is not only expanding its market but also fostering greater interoperability among electric vehicle brands. This strategic initiative underscores the growing commitment to removing charging barriers, paving the way for wider EV adoption and a more sustainable transportation future. This development holds significant promise for both current and prospective EV owners, offering enhanced convenience and alleviating range anxiety, which are critical factors in accelerating the transition to electric mobility.
