De Tullio Triumphs at Portland Indy NXT Race, Fittipaldi Regains Championship Lead
In a display of remarkable skill, Alessandro de Tullio clinched a dominant victory at the Portland International Raceway Indy NXT event, marking his second win of the season. The race was a strategic masterclass, with de Tullio leading every one of the 35 laps from his pole position. This significant triumph also saw Enzo Fittipaldi ascend back to the top of the championship standings, securing a narrow one-point lead over Nikita Johnson as the season approaches its final three rounds.
De Tullio's win was hard-earned, despite his commanding lead. He masterfully managed his tires throughout the 1.964-mile, 12-turn road course, fending off early challenges. "It wasn’t easy," de Tullio commented after the race, acknowledging the tire degradation and a fierce start where he had to defend his position from Lochie Hughes. He praised his team, stating, "The car was great. I can’t thank the whole team enough." The podium was completed by Andretti Global teammates Hughes and Max Taylor, securing second and third places respectively, while Tymek Kucharczyk finished fourth for HMD Motorsports. Jacob Abel, in his first series appearance since 2024, rounded out the top five.
The race itself was not without its dramatic moments. Despite de Tullio's clean start, there was contact between Hughes and Taylor, the second and third starters, indicating the fierce competition. Further back, HMD Motorsports' Jack Beeton spun after an incident at Turn 1 but managed to continue. A caution flag was deployed on Lap 3 when Carson Etter of Chip Ganassi Racing spun out of Turn 12. The subsequent restart on Lap 5 saw de Tullio maintain his advantage over Hughes and the rest of the field, stretching his lead as the race progressed.
Mid-race saw a compelling battle for positions outside the top five, particularly between championship rivals Fittipaldi and Johnson, who were running in 10th and 11th. Myles Rowe's spin in Turn 1 after contact with Niels Koolen resulted in Koolen receiving a drive-through penalty for avoidable contact, highlighting the intense wheel-to-wheel action. By Lap 15, de Tullio had built a lead of nearly two seconds, which extended to 2.5 seconds five laps later. While Hughes attempted to close the gap in the final laps, shaving off several tenths, de Tullio ultimately crossed the finish line 2.169 seconds ahead, solidifying his impressive victory.
