MotoGP Ride-Height Devices: Persistent Challenges Despite Ban

It may seem surprising that two front-row qualifiers encountered difficulties during the British GP start due to their ride-height devices becoming jammed, especially after MotoGP recently prohibited holeshot mechanisms specifically for race starts. Both Jorge Martin and Ai Ogura, riding Aprilias, experienced their bikes' rear sections dragging on the tarmac, indicating a failure of the ride-height adjustment system to retract.
This malfunction posed a considerable risk, though both riders eventually managed to resolve the issue and continue. Martin impressively recovered to secure second place, while Ogura later retired from the race after being unable to regain his competitive edge. The Silverstone event, occurring just two weekends after the ban on front holeshot devices following a crash-filled Catalan GP, underscored that rear ride-height adjusters, while primarily used for corner exits, are still deployed at starts for improved launch, and their faulty operation remains a significant concern.
While historical complaints often centered on ride-height devices failing to disengage despite brake application, both Martin and Ogura took personal responsibility for their poor starts at Silverstone. Martin recounted misjudging his braking point to maintain the lead, which prevented his rear device from retracting, causing him to lose several positions. Ogura similarly acknowledged his oversight in not braking forcefully enough to unlock his rear suspension, although he stated the issue did not create an immediate danger. The British GP emphasized that until these ride-height devices are completely outlawed in 2027, coinciding with the introduction of the 850cc engine era, riders will likely continue to face these challenges. There are ongoing debates about the regulation of these devices, with some advocating for an earlier, comprehensive ban on all ride-height systems due to safety concerns and the competitive imbalance created by varying technological advancements among manufacturers.
