Deliveries for these bespoke vehicles are anticipated to commence in the second half of 2027 in the US and Canada.

Tesla has initiated a recall affecting over 20,000 Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles. This measure addresses concerns regarding the intensity of their headlights, which have been found to exceed regulatory brightness standards in specific areas. This decision comes after a direct challenge from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which firmly disagreed with Tesla's initial assessment of the issue as merely a minor flaw, underscoring the potential safety risks posed to other motorists.

The federal government recently criticized Tesla for its powerful headlights. This public reprimand occurred after Tesla initially categorized the excessive brightness as an "inconsequential" safety concern, a viewpoint the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) unequivocally rejected. The official recall was filed by Tesla, affecting 20,349 vehicles. Specifically, this recall pertains to certain Tesla Model 3s produced from 2017 to 2023, totaling 1,614 units, and 18,735 Tesla Model Ys manufactured between 2020 and 2023.

The relatively small number of vehicles affected, considering Tesla's sales volume over a five-year span, is due to a specific manufacturing date for the headlight components. Only vehicles built after June 2nd of the relevant year, or those that had a headlight component replaced during service, are included in the recall. The core issue lies not in the overall brightness, but rather in certain peripheral zones of the headlights, which were found to be more than twice the permissible limit. This excessive localized brightness could temporarily impair the vision of other road users.

This is the second significant regulatory challenge Tesla has faced from federal authorities recently. The NHTSA also launched an investigation into potential suspension failures in certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, following 156 complaints about lateral link malfunctions. Tesla had previously issued a recall related to these suspension components in 2023. The nature of the headlight fix for the current recall is still under development by Tesla, with possibilities ranging from a simple over-the-air software update to more complex hardware replacements that might leverage the vehicles' adaptive beam technology.
