BYD's Yangwang U9 Aims to Break Its Own Speed Record




BYD's luxury division, Yangwang, is not content with merely holding the world record for the fastest production car. Despite its U9 Xtreme electric hypercar achieving a staggering 308.4 mph last year, the company is determined to break its own record, aiming for an even more impressive 310 mph (500 km/h).
Yangwang U9 Prepares for New Record Attempt
During the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, Stella Li, an executive vice president at BYD, revealed the ambitious plan for the Yangwang U9 Xtreme to attempt another speed record. This announcement comes after the vehicle, powered by a quad-motor system generating an astounding 2,950 horsepower and featuring a 1,200-volt battery architecture, already surpassed the previous record held by the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+.
The confidence in achieving this new milestone is bolstered by insights from Yangwang's test driver, former German racer Marc Basseng. Following the record-setting run, Basseng noted that he could have maintained full throttle for an additional second and a half, suggesting the car had untapped potential. While it remains uncertain if this brief extension would have pushed the U9 past the 310 mph mark, BYD is eager to explore the limits of its engineering prowess.
For the previous record attempt, the U9 Xtreme underwent specific modifications, including the removal of its rear wing and the installation of smaller wheels paired with wider tires. It is anticipated that further refinements might be implemented based on the data collected from the earlier run. The automotive world is now eagerly awaiting November, when Yangwang is slated to make its next record-breaking attempt.
