BYD's New Ultra-Luxury EV Sedan Set to Introduce Solid-State Batteries and Coach Doors

BYD's elite Yangwang division is on the verge of unveiling a groundbreaking electric sedan that is poised to redefine automotive luxury and technological innovation. This upcoming flagship vehicle, known internally as "HU," promises an unparalleled blend of opulent design, advanced power solutions, and rapid charging capabilities, signaling BYD's ambitious foray into the ultra-luxury market. Early insights suggest the vehicle will feature distinctive coach doors, reminiscent of high-end European marques, and could potentially mark the debut of BYD's cutting-edge solid-state battery technology. This strategic move aims to position Yangwang as a formidable competitor against established luxury automotive brands, leveraging state-of-the-art engineering and a commitment to elevated driving experiences.
Yangwang, established as BYD's premium sub-brand, consistently serves as a platform for introducing pioneering automotive technologies. Previous models under this marque have showcased innovations such as the quad-motor e4 platform, second-generation Blade Batteries, and the Disus Intelligent Body Control System. This tradition of innovation is expected to continue with the new sedan, which has recently been observed undergoing testing in China. Local automotive reports indicate that the vehicle's design bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Rolls-Royce Phantom, reinforcing its ultra-luxury aspirations. A key differentiating feature will be the inclusion of rear-hinged coach doors, a first for a BYD vehicle, enhancing both aesthetics and passenger ingress/egress.
Hu Xiaoqing, the General Manager of Yangwang, recently provided a glimpse of the executive sedan on Weibo, confirming its internal codename "HU." While specific details regarding its technical specifications remain under wraps, the images suggest support for megawatt-level fast charging, aligning with BYD's 'Flash Charging' technology. Furthermore, industry analysts and publications like CarNewsChina speculate that this model could be the first BYD vehicle to integrate solid-state EV batteries. This speculation is bolstered by recent statements from Stella Li, BYD's executive vice president, who confirmed the company's leading position in solid-state battery development and its plans for commercialization, with the first solid-state battery-equipped vehicle slated for a 2027 debut.
BYD's battery research and development arm, FinDreams, is at the forefront of this technological push, aiming for limited-batch production of sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries by 2027, with full-scale mass production anticipated by 2030. Should the new Yangwang sedan incorporate this advanced battery technology, it is likely to be offered in premium variants, while standard configurations may continue to utilize BYD’s established Blade LFP batteries. Beyond battery innovations, the flagship sedan is also projected to feature BYD's robust quad-motor e4 platform, delivering a combined output of over 1,000 horsepower, ensuring exhilarating performance befitting its luxury status. Although official pricing has yet to be announced, estimates place the vehicle's cost at over 2 million yuan, equivalent to approximately $300,000 USD, significantly surpassing the Yangwang U7's starting price of around 658,000 yuan ($98,000).
The upcoming Yangwang ultra-luxury sedan represents a significant stride for BYD, combining opulent design elements with advanced technological breakthroughs. With its Rolls-Royce-inspired coach doors, potential solid-state battery integration, and powerful performance, this vehicle is set to make a strong statement in the global electric vehicle landscape. This initiative underscores BYD's commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation and establishing itself as a dominant force in the high-end EV segment.
