Geely Unveils Groundbreaking 2.2-Megawatt EV Charging Technology

Geely Auto Group has introduced a revolutionary electric vehicle charging solution, establishing a new global benchmark for rapid power delivery. This innovative system, boasting an unprecedented 2.25-megawatt peak charging capacity, enables compatible EVs to achieve significant charge levels in a remarkably short timeframe, eclipsing existing technologies from both Eastern and Western manufacturers. The development underscores Geely's commitment to advancing EV infrastructure and addressing consumer concerns regarding charging duration.
The newly launched fifth-generation Smart Charging System, coupled with an advanced Ultra Short Blade Battery, marks a significant leap in EV technology. Under optimal conditions, Lynk & Co and Zeekr brand electric vehicles can replenish their batteries from a 10% to 70% state of charge in a mere 4 minutes and 30 seconds. A more extensive charge cycle, from 10% to 97%, can be completed in just 8 minutes and 40 seconds. This performance notably outpaces competitors, including BYD's Flash chargers, which achieve a 10-70% charge in approximately five minutes and 10-97% in nine minutes.
To mitigate the potential stress on battery cells from such high charging rates, Geely has integrated an AI-driven system known as Xingrui PowerMind. This intelligent management tool dynamically predicts and adjusts charging speeds based on anticipated battery temperatures, aiming to maintain an average battery temperature of 55 degrees Celsius, with a strict upper limit of 65 degrees Celsius. This proactive thermal regulation is critical for preserving the long-term health and performance of the battery pack, ensuring both safety and longevity.
Further enhancing the system's efficiency and safety is a sophisticated thermal management solution, dubbed an "end-to-end five-point liquid cooling" system. This comprehensive design coordinates cooling efforts across all critical components involved in the charging process: the battery pack itself, the charging port, the charging cable, the charging dispenser, and the energy storage batteries that support the chargers. This integrated approach is essential for facilitating the immense 2.2-megawatt power transfer through a single connector, a feat previously considered unattainable in the industry.
Geely also highlighted a proprietary "lithium-ion pulse restoration" technology within their new battery system. This innovation utilizes minute pulse currents to reactivate lithium ions that may accumulate at the anode during repeated rapid charging cycles. This accumulation, known as lithium plating, can lead to battery degradation. By dislodging these 'stuck' ions, the technology aims to improve charging efficiency and extend battery lifespan, drawing an analogy to preventing a bottle from overflowing by managing fluid intake.
In stark contrast to the charging capabilities observed in China, leading EV models in Western markets, such as the Lucid Gravity and Porsche Cayenne Electric, currently offer maximum charging rates of around 400 kilowatts. While the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is expected to push this to 600 kilowatts, enabling an 11-minute 10-80% charge, these figures remain significantly lower than Geely's latest offering. The rapid advancements in China's EV charging sector suggest a divergence in technological progression compared to other regions.
While Geely has unveiled impressive charging speeds, the article does not specify the actual peak charging rates its vehicles can sustain. Furthermore, while BYD's Flash chargers might be slightly less powerful individually, their widespread deployment across China, with over 10,000 stations as of August and plans for 20,000 by year-end, presents a formidable scale advantage. BYD is also expanding its network into Europe, with 3,000 planned installations. The long-term success of Geely's new system will depend not only on its technological prowess but also on its ability to match or surpass the deployment scale of its competitors, ultimately determining its impact on the broader EV market.
